Teams with Most Defeats in IPL
Twelve seasons, 1505 completed games, 13 different teams, several nerve-wrenching games and a handful of youngsters getting fast-tracked into the international scene from the league; this has been the story of the Indian Premier League so far. One of the biggest and most competitive T20 leagues in the world, the IPL is all set to enter its thirteenth season.
Chennai Super Kings have been the most successful team in terms of win percentage (61.28%) and Mumbai Indians with 4 titles have been crowned champions the most number of times. Among the current teams, Delhi Capitals (formerly Delhi Daredevils), Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore are the only teams yet to win the trophy.

#5 Kolkata Knight Riders (83)
Two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders with 83 losses stand fifth in the list of most defeats in the IPL. Starting their IPL with three disastrous seasons, KKR’s fortunes turned once they rejigged the core and let go big names. Their approach of getting players suitable for each role helped them win two titles in 2012 and 2014, along with 4 play-off appearances (2011, 2016, 2017, 2018). Gautam Gambhir played a key role in shaping the team, but his desire to play for his home side made him part ways with the Kolkata franchise in 2018. The last season was mediocre for them, with the weak bench strength haunting them at the crucial stages of the tournament.
With 92 wins and 83 defeats, along with three super-over losses from 178 completed games, KKR also have the third most wins. With a win percentage of 52.52% KKR are the only team in this list to have a positive win/loss ratio.

#4 Royal Challengers Bangalore (92)
One of the most entertaining sides of the IPL, RCB have been the perennial under-achievers of the tournament. Three finals and two play-off finishes is what they have achieved despite having one of the best sides on paper in several editions. Having two of the greatest batsmen of the era in the form of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, RCB are expected to roll over most sides on most days, but the continuous overlooking of the bowling department and the over-dependence on the two heavyweights has led to lose crucial games. Called chokers by many, RCB came agonizingly close to win the title in 2009 as well in 2016, but fell short of the target by small margins. The 2011 final saw them beaten convincingly at the hands of CSK.
With 83 wins and 92 losses from 177 completed games, with a loss and a win in two super-over ties, RCB stand fourth in the list of most defeats in the IPL.

#3 Kings XI Punjab (94)
The semifinalists of the inaugural season, Kings XI Punjab have managed to finish in the top four only once since then, when they lost to KKR in the finals in 2014. With as many as 13 captains (some of whom were forced changes due to injury) in twelve seasons and a new captain for the upcoming season, KXIP have the knack of chopping and changing with the squad a bit too much. They have been thoroughly entertaining at some parts of their journey, but have been disappointing overall. The George Bailey-led side did show some promise in 2014, but failed to continue the form in subsequent seasons. The Ashwin-led side has failed miserably in the second half of the season after having an incredible first half for two consecutive years now. With Rahul at the helm, the management will expect some consistency from the side.
From 176 completed games, KXIP have won 80, lost 94 and won two super-over contests. The win percentage of 46.02% is the second lowest among the current teams.

#2 Sunrisers Hyderabad/ Deccan Chargers (95)
The Deccan Chargers after finishing at the bottom of the table in the inaugural edition, went on to lift the trophy the next season. The Gilchrist-led side reached the semifinals in the third season but faltered in the next two season. In the five seasons they played, DC lost 46 out of 75 games. Their win percentage of 38.66% is the second lowest among all IPL teams, after Pune Warriors (26.66%). They were renamed to Sunrisers Hyderabad 2013 onwards after the ownership of the team shifted from Deccan Chronicles to Sun TV. And with it, changed the fortunes. The Sunrisers in the 7 years so far have been crowned champions once (2016) and have appeared in the play-offs five times (four consecutive times since 2016). 57 wins from 108 games is a tremendous turnaround for the side they were before 2013.
A combined loss of 95 games put Sunrisers Hyderabad/Deccan Chargers second in the list of most defeats in the IPL.

#1 Delhi Capitals (97)
One of the three teams yet to win the IPL trophy, Delhi Capitals have an unwanted record to their name of being the team with most defeats in the IPL. The Delhi-based franchise started the tournament well, with two semifinal finishes in the first two editions, but lacked consistency thereafter. The 2012 season was the best for them, where they finished at the top of the table after the league stage but bowed out of the tournament after losing to KKR and CSK in Qualifiers. Six consecutive seasons of not get into the playoffs followed. During this phase, they also became the team with most wooden-spoon finishes (4 times). The 2019 season saw DC qualify for the playoffs for the first time in seven years. They ultimately lost to CSK in the qualifiers and finished third.
From 175 completed games, Delhi have won 76 and lost 97 games, plus 2 super-over games with one loss and one win. The win percentage of 44% is the lowest among the eight teams at present.
