El Clasico, which is a spanish term for “the Classic”, is used to describe any Football match played between Real Madrid and the Barcelona Football club.
At the start, the term was used only for the matches held in the La Liga, but later with time, the term tended to include every single match between these two fierce rivals.
It is considered one of the biggest club Football matches in the world after the UEFA Champions League Final, the reason being the intensity, the exceptional goal celebrations and the players and the fans mocking the opponent.
The fact that these two clubs possess some of the best players in the world raise the standard of the game as well. Barcelona, at this point of time, are ahead in El Clasico head-to-head with a total of 115 wins as compared to to Real Madrid’s 99.
Barcelona and Madrid are the two big cities in Spain. Despite the two cities receding within Spain, they follow and promote different nationalism. Madrid promotes Spanish Nationalism, whereas Barcelona promotes Catalonia nationalism.
The bitter relationship started after the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco’s troops arrested and executed Josep Sunyol, the president of Barcelona and the member of Republican Left of Catalonia in the year 1936.
The El Clasico emerged from the 1943 Copa del Rey semi-final match where Barcelona won 3-0.
After the match, the Real Madrid players accused the referee Fombona Fernandes of being biased towards Barcelona and also, the home supporters for distracting them during the game. It led to the Madrid association abolishing Barcelona fans’ entry into their home ground.
