Having started off pretty well in the first two seasons of IPL, Delhi Daredevils now Delhi Capitals journey has only brought misery on the faces of Delhi fans ever since, not fetching a single IPL trophy in as many as eleven IPL seasons.
While people have lost all hope from the capitals, this year could be the breakthrough year for Delhi as the owners are all geared up to change the fortunes, starting off with the franchise’s name Delhi Daredevils being changed to Delhi Capitals from this season.
And perhaps, it’s not just the name but the team combination and the recent form of the players suggest there could be a massive turnaround for Delhi this year with world’s best skipper Ricky Ponting leading from the front.
Here are five major reasons why Delhi Capitals can lift this year’s IPL trophy:
#Reason 1 Dhawan Returns Home

Dhawan has scored 497 runs last season at a healthy average of 38. 23. The left-handed batsman has been one of the mainstays in the current Indian side scoring 897 runs in 2018 at an outstanding average of 49.83 in the year 2018. Perhaps, Shikhar Dhawan’s move to Delhi Capitals this year can pave the way for Delhi’s turnaround.
#Reason 2 Solid Opening Pair
One of the major reason for Delhi Daredevils’ downfall has been the inconsistent opening pair. From Jason Roy to Mayank Agarwal, Quinton De Kock to Gautam Gambhir in the Delhi Capitals have tried everything in the last couple of years only to be left disappointed in the end. Interestingly, this year’s opening pair of Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw looks more solid, with both the openers in outstanding form of late.
After proving his mettle in the recent test series against West Indies, the former under-19 captain Prithvi Shaw will look to make the most of this season’s IPL in a bid to open the doors for the contention in the Indian side.
Legendary batsmen such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid have time and again heaped praise for the 19-old-year-old batsman. It would be interesting to see how Shaw plays along with Dhawan in this season.
#Reason 3 Electrifying Middle Order
With the likes of Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Colin Munro, and Chris Morris, Delhi Capital’s middle order is looking as solid as ever. Delhi Skipper Shreyas Iyer had a fantastic season last year, having scored 411 runs in 14 matches at an impressive average of 37.46. On the other hand, Rishabh Pant also enjoyed an incredible season, scoring 684 runs in 14 innings with a stellar average of 52.61. Fans would be hopping from the duo to replicate the performances this year as well.
#Reason 4 Top-Notch Pace Attack
Arguably, Delhi Capitals in this season boast of one of the most potent bowling attacks with Trent Boult and Kagiso Rabada leading the pack. Having missed the previous season, Kagiso Rabada will be looking to make the most of this year’s IPL, who will be accompanying Trent Boult and Chris Morris in a bid to change Delhi’s fortune this season.
#Reason 5 Stellar Fielding Department
Delhi Capitals this year haven’t been short of outstanding fielders as well, boasting of fine athletes in the side such as Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Shikhar Dhawan, Trent Boult, Colin Ingram to name a few. Delhi Capitals certainly looks good on paper. It will be interesting to see if they come up triumph this time around or we have to face another disappointment. We will have to wait and see.
