IPL 2022: Overated Cricketers of IPL History

The cash-rich league is back. The Indian Premier League 2022 is all set to kick off in Mumbai Indians when Chennai Super Kings lock their horns with Kolkata Knight Riders. Two new teams have been added and that has resulted in the number of games as well. The new format is adopted in which ten teams have been put into groups of five. The teams in the same group will play twice against each other and will play once against the teams of the other group.

The tournament has seen players who can ton the delivery over the boundary or knock the wickets off with ease. However, there have been players for whom the franchises have broken the bank but the players have failed to live up to the hype. Here is the list of overrated cricketers of IPL History Till Date.

Overrated Cricketers of IPL History Till Date:

Prithvi Shaw

The swashbuckling Indian opener came to the picture when he played crucial knocks in the ICC U-19 World Cup 2017. However, Prithvi Shaw has failed to live up to the hype after a successful first campaign in IPL as well as a stint with the Indian National Team.

The 22-year-old has failed to take his average beyond 30s in the league and has failed to deliver in the crucial games. In the previous campaign, the most successful one, he scored 473 runs in 15 games at a strike rate of 159.13.

Sanju Samson

If there is any player who fails at the international level but puts inconsistent efforts in the Indian Premier League, that has to be Sanju Samson. The player has always been on the radar of the national team but has failed to take his IPL team over the line.

The young wicket-keeper batsman is all set to captain his team, Rajasthan Royals, but he is one of the most overrated cricketers of the IPl history to date. In 121 games, the player has raked in 3000+ runs at an average hovering around 30. His best season came in 2021 when he scored 484 runs from 14 games.

Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj Singh

There is no doubt regarding Yuvraj Singh being one of the best players that Indian Cricket has ever seen. However, he is one of the most overrated players in the History of the IPL. After the initial success, the player tapered away but his price went on the increasing season after season.

The Punjab player has 2750 runs in 132 matches in the cash-rich league. His average stood at  24.77 and his strike rate at 129.71.

Glenn Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell

One season good. One season poor. This has been the story of an Australian all-rounder. After all the gung-ho in 2014, the player could not live up to the hype and neither did franchises stop splurging the money on the player. The Australian all-rounder, Glenn Maxwell, is an overrated cricketer in the history of IPL.

In 97 games, the player has 2000+ runs despite featuring across nine seasons. Amongst the 2000+ runs, 1000+ runs from two seasons (2014 and 2022) combined.

Eoin Morgan

The English international helped Kolkata Knight Riders to make it to the finals of the Indian Premier League 2021 after a poor start to the season. However, barring his captaincy, the southpaw has not lived up to the bill.

In 83 games, he has scored 1405 runs and his average has been below 25 across ten seasons. His best season came in 2020 when he scored 418 runs at an average of 41.8. However, the player has had a torrid time in the league and remained unsold in Mega Auction 2022.
