Right from Kapil Dev- Gavaskar Captaincy tussle  to now Kohli-Rohit leadership Controversy how these two incidents are completely different to each other?

1983 World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev started his International career in the year 1978 whereas legendary batter  Sunil Manohar Gavaskar made his debut for India in the year 1971 and in cricket 3-4 years older gap is considered as a huge gap. Sunil Gavaskar was Kapil dev’s senior and there have been lot of stories cooked up in the media that these two didn’t see each other eye to eye in 80s.

Kapil Dev who was made the captain of 1983 has said several times that Sunil Gavaskar should have been the captain of the marquee event as he was a senior he also added that Gavaskar should have remained as captain till the time he played for Men in Blue. Of late he has said in numerous interviews that what selectors did by constantly changing captaincy between me and Gavaskar in 80s was not a good move.

Kapil Dev controversy with sunil gavaskar

Kapil dev was sacked as captain post 1983  world cup and he returned as captain in 1985 and guided India on a Test series win over England. He was retained as captain in 1987 world cup. He was also vice captain of the national side in 1989 tour of Pakistan.

In 1984  home test series against England , Kapil dev was dropped from the team because he played some rash shots at delhi and Dev Said Sunil Gavaskar did have a say in his axe and later gavaskar said that he would never dropped his match winner and selecton team headed by Chandu Borde took the call.

When Indian stepped on to play in Eden Gardens Crowd was angry at Gavaskar for dropping Kapil dev even vegetables were thrown at him and since then the latter decided that he will never play at Gardens.

India won 1983 World Cup  under the leadership of Kapil Dev and 1985 world championship of cricket under Sunil Gavaskar’s captaincy and the Mumbai Lobby could have played a big role in favouring gavaskar’s case.

Let’s talk about the another case of Virat KohliRohit Sharma captaincy tussle which has been a talking point of world cricket in last 1-2 months in detail.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

It all started when Rohit couldn’t board the flight to Australia as his father was unwell and went to NCA but kohli said in press conference he had no idea why he is not there at the tour as the Mumbaiker played franchise cricket for Mumbai Indians prior Australia tour.  Later Rohit said he has already informed board about his father illness and then afterwards things started taking a different angle between these two.

When Kohli step down from T20 captaincy, there was a report even suggesting that Kohli didn’t wanted Rohit  to lead the side due to latter being 35 year old instead recommended KL Rahul’s name as leader to captain India for future.

But the other reason why media writes so much tussle is because Rohit has 5 IPL title and Kohli have none neither with RCB nor with India and this factor has  has greatly contributed in latter’s omission. Based on my opinion the controversy is totally similar in a way that both these ace players have never came out in public and spoken bad about each other.

It is all hyped up in the media as two strong players who plays in the same era can have the difference of opinion but when they step on to the middle their cause is same is to bring laurels for the nation.

Also the main difference between the captaincy controversies between Gavaskar-Kapil Dev and Rohit-Kohli is that captaincy keep shuffling between former these two players in 80s whereas there is no captaincy change between Kohli and Rohit as the captaincy from Kohli was shifted to Rohit permanently.
