Vinod Kambli finds health care support through Sunil Gavaskar Foundation
Vinod Kambli, a former reputed and now retired Indian cricketer needs no introduction. He has been the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s longtime opening partner when they used to play together back in the day.
Kambli has been in the news off late for not so good reasons. He has been battling severe health issues since a long time now. Back in December 2024, he was admitted to the hospital due to urinary infections and cramps and later discharged. Post his homecoming, Vinod stated that he was going through financial crisis in his personal life.
He also underwent two heart surgeries in 2013, wherein he had received financial support from his close aide Sachin Tendulkar.
Earlier this year, Kambli met Sunil Gavaskar during the opening event for the 50th-anniversary celebrations of the Wankhede Stadium in January 2025. The former cricketer was seen facing struggle in waking, but despite that, he displayed his respect for the legendary cricketer by touching his feet.
Amidst this, the India batter and veteran Sunil Gavaskar had made a promise that he would certainly help Kambli out, who is like his son. Gavaskar and his foundation have now fulfilled this promise.
According to a report by The Times of India, Sunil Gavaskar has come in to aid Vinod Kambli through his CHAMPS Foundation. Gavaskar’s foundation began in 1999, and as an organization helps support former international sports personalities who are in need of financial assistance.
From April 1 onwards, Vinod Kambli will receive an aid of INR 30,000 per month till the day he is alive. He will also receive yearly medical assistance of INR 30,000 to cover his expenses in addition to the monthly instalment.
The former left-handed batter has played 17 Tests and 104 ODIs for India between the 1993-2000 period. In an interaction with a leading publication house, Sunil Gavaskar mentioned that he and the 1983 World Cup winning team members are very conscious of younger players, some of whom are like their own sons and grandsons. He then promised that they wanted to take care of Vinod Kambli and help him get back on his feet.
The legendary cricketer even personally met Kambli’s doctors after meeting him at Wankhede Stadium and instructed his foundation to immediately provide assistance to him.
This helping hand in Kambli’s tough times has surely touched the hearts of all cricket fans and shown that humanity is still alive in today’ times. It seems like Vinod has found a new ray of hope and lease on life, with the financial aid to help him recover without any burden or responsibility.
Although Vinod Kambli was known to be a gifted and talented batsman, but with time he lost his glory and became complacent of his own career. This led to his gradual downfall and struggles arose in his life. It is really important for cricketers to take care of their financial expenditure knowing they have to one day retire from the sport and must learn to manage their money to take care of themselves during crunch moments in life.
