Chadalavada Sundhararaman Anandha Bhavani Devi Indian sabre fencer, also known simply as Bhavani Devi, was born on August 27, of the year 1993. Following her qualification for the 2020 Summer Olympics, Bhavani Devi became the first fencer from India to reach the Olympics. Bhavani Devi is assisted by the Rahul Dravid Athlete Mentorship Programme, run by the GoSports Foundation. Bhavani Devi won the bronze medal at the 2023 Asian Fencing Championships, making her the first fencer from India to do so.

Early Life

In the city of Chennai, in the state of Tamil Nadu, Bhavani Devi was born. Her father was a member of a Telugu family that originated in Chennai but later relocated to Samalkot town in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari district. In the year 2004, Bhavani Devi began her sporting career. Bhavani Devi attended Muruga Dhanushkodi Girls Higher Secondary School in Chennai, St. Joseph’s College of Engineering in Chennai, and Government Brennen College in Thalassery, Kerala, where she earned her business administration degree.

Bhavani Devi first learned how to fence at the school level in the year 2004. Bhavani Devi enrolled in the SAI (Sports Authority of India) Centre in Thalassery, Kerala, after completing her tenth-grade year. When Bhavani Devi was 14 years old, she competed in her first international competition in Turkey, where she received a black card for arriving three minutes late. Bhavani Devi won a bronze medal in the 2010 Asian Championship in the Philippines.

Tournaments and Medals

Bhavani began her medal-winning streak with the bronze at the 2009 Commonwealth Championship held in Malaysia. Since then, Bhavani Devi has won bronze at the 2010 International Open in Thailand, the 2010 Cadet Asian Championship in the Philippines, the 2012 Common Wealth Championship in Jersey, the 2015 Under-23 Asian Championship in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and the 2015 Flemish Open.

Bhavani Devi won the silver medal in the under-23 Asian Championships in the Philippines in the year 2014, becoming the first Indian to accomplish so. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa presented her with INR three lakh as financial aid for training in the US following her winning the 2014 Asian Championship. Bhavani Devi was chosen in the year 2015 as one of the 15 athletes to participate in the Rahul Dravid Athlete Mentorship Programme by the “Go Sports Foundation.” Bhavani Devi won two gold medals, one each at the Commonwealth Championship in Jersey in the year 2012 and the Tuscany Cup in Italy in the year 2014.

In the 2016 Viking Cup Icelandic International Sabre Tournaments, which were held in Reykjavik, Bhavani Devi came in fifth place. After falling short against Bashta Anna of Azerbaijan in the women’s sabre individual competition at the 2019 Tournoi Satellite Fencing Competition in Ghent, Belgium, Bhavani Devi was awarded a silver medal. Bhavani Devi created history by becoming the first Indian woman to take home a gold medal in the senior sabre competition at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Canberra. In the finals, Bhavani Devi defeated Emily Ruaux of England after defeating Catriona Thomson of Scotland in the semifinals. Bhavani Devi practices at the Sports Authority of India in Thalassery, Kerala, as well as in Italy.
