Abhilasha Mhatre is a former captain of the Indian National Women’s Kabaddi Team and a professional kabaddi player from India. Mhatre received the 2015 Arjuna Award from the Indian government. One of the best kabaddi players in India, Mhatre is renowned for her graceful footwork. Abhilasha is affectionately known as the “Queen of Kabaddi”. Abhilasha competed for India’s gold-medal-winning kabaddi squad at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon. Abhilasha Mhatre was also a member of the Indian side that triumphed at the 2012 Kabaddi World Cup in Patna, India.

Early Life

Swami Muktanand High School in Mumbai was Abhilasha’s place of education. Abhilasha began competing for the Chembur Krida Kendra club when she was in the sixth grade. Her school’s grounds served as their practice area. Abhilasha used to practice there with many of the club’s well-known senior players, so she was exposed to major events at an early age. Abhilasha’s talent and dedication earned her a spot in the Indian team in the year 2006 for the South Asian Games in Sri Lanka after a string of outstanding national performances.

Comeback

Abhilasha competed for India at the age of 17 but sustained repeated injuries in the years 2007 and 2008. Her need for surgery on both knees prevented her from playing kabaddi. Abhilasha Mhatre did, however, make a successful comeback in 2010 and took home the gold medal at the Dombivali-based 57th Senior National Kabaddi Championship. Abhilasha Mhatre was recognized as the 58th Senior National Kabaddi Championship’s top player in Udipi. After her comeback, she competed in five significant international Kabaddi competitions.

Domestic Career

In the year 2005, Abhilasha Mhatre made her debut as a member of the Maharashtra state kabaddi team. In Hyderabad’s Senior National Kabaddi Championship, when Maharashtra earned the silver medal, Abhilasha Mhatre captained her team. She received the title of “Best Player of the Tournament.”

Abhilasha Mhatre served Indian Railways for more than five years after her time with Maharashtra, winning five gold medals in the process. She was a representative of Railways when she received the “Best Raider Award” in the year 2011. Abhilasha Mhatre returned to Maharashtra and is currently a regular team member. Abhilasha Mhatre competed in ten Senior National Kabaddi Championships and took home five gold, one silver, and four bronze medals.

International Career

In the year 2006, Abhilasha participated in her first international competition at the South Asian Games in Sri Lanka, where India took home the gold medal. Abhilasha did not compete in the Asian Games in the year 2010, but she returned to the Indian team in the year 2012.

Abhilasha was essential to India’s victory in the year 2012 Women’s Kabaddi World Cup. In the year 2013, Abhilasha participated in the Indian team that won the gold medal at the 4th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in South Korea. Abhilasha earned the gold medal while representing India at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, in the year 2014. In the decisive match against Iran, she excelled under duress to lead India to win.

Abhilasha won another gold medal while representing India at the 2016 South Asian Games, which were held in India. For the 2017 Asian Kabaddi Championship, which Iran is hosting, Abhilasha was given the reins as captain of the Indian squad. The Indian team eventually won the competition, adding another gold medal to her collection.

Women’s Kabaddi Challenge

In the Women’s Kabaddi Challenge of the year 2016, a women’s professional league comparable to the Pro Kabaddi League, Abhilasha Mhatre served as the team captain for the Ice Divas. Abhilasha was the second-highest scorer in the competition even though her side didn’t take home the championship she played well in the league.
