NBA All-Star Weekend: Buddy Hield bests Devin Booker in the 3-point contest, plus more tap-ins

In one of the marquee events at the NBA All-Star weekend, Buddy Hield won the prestigious 3-point contest after a nerve-racking battle against Phoenix Suns’ superstar Devin Booker. It was so close that it came down to the final shot and the Sacramento Kings star buried the defining shot to go home with the trophy.

All you need to know: The Participants!

Damian Lillard was named in the 8-man list for the 3-point contest as well as for the NBA All-Star game. But the Portland Trail Blazers point guard had to pull out of the NBA’s showpiece events after suffering a strained groin during the regular-season game against Memphis Grizzlies.

Suns’ point guard Devin Booker came aboard as Lillard’s replacement, joining the 2019 3-point contest champion Joe Harris, Buddy Hield, Trae Young, Joe Harris, Duncan Robinson, Zach LaVine, Devonte’ Graham and Davis Bertans in the 2020 NBA Three-Point Contest.

A small change to the system!

The NBA made some adjustments to the contest with the addition of two “Dew Zone” shots to a player’s rafters. As per NBA announcements, the Dew Zone shots must be taken from six feet beyond the three-point arc and will carry three points apiece.

And the winner was Buddy Hield:

As mentioned above, the event was contested by 8 players but only three made it to the final round. Defending champion Joe Harris was knocked out in the first round, after scoring just 22 points, as were crowd favorite Zach Lavine of the Chicago Bulls (23), Miami Heat’s Duncan Robinson (19), Charlotte Hornets’ Devonte Graham (18), and Atlanta Hawk’s Trae Young (15).

The final round was contested by Sacramento Kings guard Buddy Hield, Phoenix Suns’ point guard Devon Booker and Washington Wizards forward Davis Bertans. won the contest after scoring 27 points out of a maximum 40 in the finals to better Devin Booker’s 26.

Bertans scored 22 points to start the final round but was easily bested by Booker who racked up 26 points by burying seven of his last 10 shots. Hield was the last man but knew what he had to do to win the event. He drained his entire money ball rack to better Booker.

As a shooter, this is on your bucket list,” Hield told reporters after winning the 3-point contest. “You have to come in, and you want to win a 3-point shootout. With a stacked field like that, it makes it even better. The pressure is on, and you’ve got to show up.”
