Lakshya Sen Equals Gopichand’s Feet with Scottish Open Title

India’s upcoming shuttler Lakshya Sen continued with his splendid run as he clinched his fourth title in three months after emerging victorious in Scottish Open final in Glasgow. Lakshya overcame Brazil’s Ygor Coelho18-21, 21-18, 21-19 in the men’s singles summit clash that lasted 56-minutes.

The young Indian star has clinched three titles- SaarLorLux Open, Dutch Open, and Belgian International since September 2019. Lakshya, who was ousted in the second round of Irish Open, had made necessary changes in the game ahead of the tournament the changes he made paid dividend as he dished out outstanding performances right from the beginning.

 

In the opening game of the summit clash, Lakshya was trailing initially, however, he managed to turn the tables to grab a 10-8 lead. The comeback for the Indian was not enough, as the Brazilian went on to register six straight points to run away with the game 21-18.

The young Indian shuttler then made a strong comeback as he gave a befitting reply to Ygor Coelho, winning the second game by a similar margin 21-18. The third game then became more crucial for both the players and both played it in a way as their life was dependent on it. World No. 58 Coelho took an 11-8 lead at the mid-game break but Lakshya kept on making comebacks and eventually won the contest.

With the victory, Lakshya became the fourth Indian to win the Scottish Open. He now shares the honour with the greats like Anand Pawar, Arvind Bhatt and coach Pullela Gopichand who have earlier won the title.

After the game, Lakshya tweeted “Happy to win the Scottish Open title! A hard-fought match against my friend Ygor Coelho. It was a really nice training with you in Denmark and playing a good match against you today.”

Lakshya will next be seen in action at the Syed Modi International Championship that is scheduled to kick-off on Tuesday in Lucknow.
