Wisden 2022 Awards: Full List of Wisden Leading Cricketer of the Year

Every year The Wisden is a book published in England that acknowledges the best cricketers in the world annually.

Just after the England-West Indies series, Joe Root resigned from the England Captaincy.

In the latest edition of the Wisden Cricketers of the year list, Joe root was named the ‘Leading Cricketer in the world’ after scoring 1708 Test runs in 2021.

Former England Captain, Root finished with the third-highest ever total of runs (1708) in a calendar year only falling behind Pakistan’s Mohammad Yousuf (1788) and Viv Richards (1710).

Root’s outstanding yearly batting numbers include a haul of 1708 runs with 6 test centuries at 61. oo average in his last 15 matches in 2021.

Although, Root had a great year as a batter his England captaincy record in 2021 was not so good as Root’s side was defeated in the Ashes series against Australia and later they lost to West Indies 1-0 in a 3 match test series.

“Root rose above the struggles of England’s Test side to produce one of the all-time great performances in a calendar year,” Wisden editor Lawrence Booth said.

South Africa opener Lizelle lee was named the leading women’s player in the world. Lizelle overall scored a total of 632 runs in her 11 ODIs in 2021. Lizelle averaged an amazing 90.28, scoring one hundred and 5 fifties.

Newly Indian Captain and Vice-captain duo also made it to Wisden’s Cricketers of the year, Rohit Sharma made a total of 906 runs in 11 test matches. Against England itself, Rohit amassed 368 runs in 4 test matches with an average of 52.57. Meanwhile, Indian fast pacer Jasprit Bumrah grabbed 30 wickets in 2021. This duo was the major reason to win in England.

In Wisen Cricketer of the year list, Pakistan’s wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan won the T20 cricketer of the year. Rizwan broke the for the most runs scored by a batter in a calendar year across all t20 format matches. Rizwan scored a total of 2036 runs in 48 matches with an average of  56.00. He scored 1 century and 18 half-centuries.
