Manav Suthar’s 10-Wicket Galle Masterclass: The Stats Behind India’s New Spin Star
Manav Suthar has already made his Test career memorable after only two matches. The 24-year-old left-arm spinner followed his seven-wicket debut against Afghanistan with a 10-wicket match haul against Sri Lanka in Galle, helping India secure a 165-run victory in the first Test. His performance was the main reason Sri Lanka were bowled out for 284 in the first innings and 206 in the second.
The Galle Test also produced Suthar’s first 10-wicket haul in Test cricket and his second five-wicket haul in the format. He took 4/76 in the first innings and 6/55 in the second, finishing the match with 10 wickets for 131 runs. That made him the first Indian to take a 10-wicket haul in an away Test at such a young age, adding another major number to a career that has moved very quickly over the past few years.
What makes Suthar’s performance even more interesting is that it did not come on a pitch that was impossible to bat on. Sri Lanka’s batters were able to spend long periods at the crease, and the match showed that Suthar’s biggest strength was not simply getting the ball to turn sharply. His control, changes in pace, accuracy and patience allowed him to keep creating chances even when the surface was not offering huge help.
The numbers from Galle now sit alongside a strong domestic record. Before making his Test debut, Suthar had already built a first-class record that included 147 wickets in 32 matches, eight five-wicket hauls and three 10-wicket match hauls. His first-class career also includes a century, showing that he has developed as a bowling all-rounder rather than being only a specialist spinner.
Manav Suthar’s Galle Test: 10 Wickets in One Match
Suthar’s match against Sri Lanka began with a four-wicket haul in the first innings. He bowled 21.4 overs, conceded 76 runs and took four wickets as India gained a strong first-innings lead after Sri Lanka were dismissed for 284. Ravindra Jadeja also took three wickets, but Suthar remained an important part of India’s attack throughout the innings.
The second innings was where Suthar took the game away from Sri Lanka. After the home side had spent more than 30 overs without losing a wicket in the morning session, India finally broke the partnership and returned after lunch with a completely different spell of bowling. Suthar then took 6/55 in 23.4 overs, removing six of Sri Lanka’s batters as India finished the innings in just over a session.
His second-innings figures were especially impressive because he did not need a huge amount of turn to create problems. Instead, he kept bowling in the right areas and waited for batters to make mistakes. The final result was 206 all out, with India winning by 165 runs after setting Sri Lanka a target of 372.
The match gave Suthar figures of 10/131, which became the biggest bowling performance of his young international career. It also gave him his first Test 10-wicket haul after taking seven wickets on debut against Afghanistan.
Suthar’s Second Five-Wicket Haul Came in His Second Test
Suthar’s rise at Test level has been almost impossible to ignore from a numbers point of view. His debut against Afghanistan in June produced figures of 6/33 and 1/29, giving him seven wickets in his first Test match. He also scored 28 runs with the bat as India recorded an innings-and-300-run win, the biggest victory in the country’s Test history by runs.
He then came to Sri Lanka and went one better in his second match. His 10 wickets in Galle took his Test wicket tally to 17 wickets from two matches, meaning he has already taken at least five wickets in an innings twice in his short international career.
The numbers become even more impressive when his workload is considered. Across his first two Tests, Suthar has bowled more than 77 overs and conceded only 193 runs, giving him a Test bowling average of roughly 11.35. His economy rate is around 2.50 runs per over, while his bowling strike rate is close to one wicket every 27 balls. These are early-career figures, but they show how effective he has been with the ball so far.

These figures are updated after the completion of the Galle Test on August 19, 2026. His first Test against Afghanistan remains the starting point of his international record, while the Sri Lanka match has already become the biggest bowling performance of his career.
Suthar’s First-Class Career Explains His Test Success
Suthar’s Test numbers did not appear out of nowhere. His domestic career in first-class cricket had already given selectors plenty of reasons to take his name seriously, especially because he had regularly taken wickets over long spells. Current career records list him with 147 first-class wickets in 32 matches, including eight five-wicket hauls and three 10-wicket matches.
His first-class bowling average is around 25.13, with an economy rate of 2.91. Those numbers are particularly useful for understanding his style because they show that he has not relied only on short bursts of wickets. He has regularly bowled long spells and kept the scoring rate under control, which is an important part of being a successful red-ball spinner.
His best first-class bowling figures are 8/33, while he has already taken three 10-wicket match hauls in domestic cricket. That experience helped prepare him for the long spells and changing conditions he faced in Test cricket.
Suthar has also contributed with the bat in domestic cricket. He has scored 1,071 first-class runs, including one century and six fifties, with a highest score of 120. His first-class batting average is 26.12, which supports his status as a bowling all-rounder rather than a specialist bowler who offers very little with the bat.

|---|---|
| Matches | 32 |
| Runs | 1,071 |
| Highest Score | 120 |
| Batting Average | 26.12 |

| Best Bowling | 8/33 |
| Bowling Average | 25.13 |
| Economy Rate | 2.91 |
| Five-Wicket Hauls | 8 |
| Ten-Wicket Hauls | 3 |
There is a clear pattern in these numbers. Suthar has been taking wickets regularly in domestic cricket, and his eight five-wicket hauls and three 10-wicket matches show that big bowling performances were already part of his record before he entered international cricket.
The 2022-23 Ranji Trophy Season Was an Early Turning Point
One of the early major steps in Suthar’s career came during the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy season. He took 39 wickets in six matches for Rajasthan, finishing as his team’s leading wicket-taker and showing that he could produce a large number of wickets in a short domestic season.
That season helped establish his name in Indian domestic cricket. He was not simply picking up one or two wickets in every match; he was regularly taking multiple wickets and bowling long spells, which made him a valuable player in first-class cricket.
His domestic record continued to grow from there. Suthar’s best first-class figures of 8/33 and his 120 against Himachal Pradesh became further signs that he had the skills to contribute in more than one way.

The List A numbers are not as eye-catching as the first-class numbers, but they add to Suthar’s experience across different forms of the game. His most important work with the ball has clearly come in longer cricket, where he has more time to build pressure and attack a batter over several overs.
Suthar Has Also Played IPL
Suthar entered the IPL through the Gujarat Titans, who picked him up in 2024. He has played five IPL matches so far and has taken two wickets, with his best figures being 1/19.
His IPL opportunities have been limited compared with his domestic first-class career, but the experience has exposed him to some of the world’s best white-ball batters. In the 2026 season, he made five appearances and took two wickets, according to current career records.
His IPL bowling numbers are not yet comparable with his first-class or Test figures. Across his five matches, he has bowled eight overs and taken two wickets, with an economy rate above 11. However, his limited opportunities mean the numbers represent a small sample rather than his full white-ball record.

Suthar has not yet made his ODI or T20I debut for India, so there are currently no international figures in those formats. His international career so far has been entirely in Test cricket, where his first two matches have already produced 17 wickets and one 10-wicket haul.
From Rajasthan’s Domestic Circuit to 10 Test Wickets in a Match
Suthar was born in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, on August 3, 2002, and developed through Rajasthan’s domestic cricket system. He has represented Rajasthan at senior level and also played for India A, Rest of India, Central Zone and other teams during his rise through domestic cricket.
His domestic breakthrough came with strong Ranji Trophy performances, followed by opportunities in India A cricket. He also represented India in the Under-19 setup and played in the 2023 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup, where he took 10 wickets.
That path explains why Suthar was ready when his Test opportunity came. He had already bowled long spells in first-class cricket, played against strong opposition in India A matches and experienced different pitch conditions before making his senior international debut.
The numbers now stand clearly: two Tests, 17 wickets, two five-wicket hauls and one 10-wicket match haul. Alongside a first-class record of 147 wickets in 32 matches, those figures provide a simple statistical picture of a spinner whose strongest work has consistently come when he has time to settle into a spell and attack the batter over and over again.
For Manav Suthar, Galle was not just another match on the career record. It added 10 wickets, a match-winning 6/55 in the second innings and his first Test 10-for to a statistical record that was already filled with big domestic bowling performances.
