Watch : MS Dhoni’s furious reaction when “Baby Malinga Patheerana” got in the way of a run-out!

The Rajasthan Royals easily defeated the Chennai Super Kings on Thursday, moving them to the top of the 2023 Indian Premier League standings. The RR secured a 32-run triumph after amassing a massive total of 202/5 in 20 overs while limiting MS Dhoni’s team to 170/6. RR also kept their unbeaten record when facing the Super Kings intact this season after defeating their opponents by 3 runs in their opening game at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored 77 runs off just 43 deliveries, gave the Royals a flying start to their innings. The visitors did mount a comeback in the middle overs, quickly removing Jos Buttler, Yashasvi, and skipper Sanju Samson. Had CSK bowler Matheesha Pathirana not blocked MS Dhoni’s toss in the 16th over, they might have added a fourth dismissal.

Shimron Hetmyer, a left-handed hitter, mistimes his pull shot, and Dhoni quickly gathers the ball and directs it towards the stumps in the side of the non-striker. However, Pathirana blocked the toss, which caused the ball to move much more slowly.

Pathirana and Dhoni both expressed their disappointment in the young Sri Lankan player with expressive motions and sarcastic smiles, respectively.

Hetmyer was, however, out in the first ball of the next over, but Dhruv Jurel (34 off 15 balls) and Devdutt Padikkal (27* off 13 balls) put on a remarkable power-hitting performance to lead the team to a 200+ score in Jaipur. Rutruaj Gaikwad (47) and Shivam Dube (52) made significant contributions to the run chase, but other hitters fell short, as Devon Conway (8), Ajinkya Rahane (15), and Ambati Rayudu (0) all left the field for very little run.

Following their loss on Thursday night, the Super Kings slid to third place in the standings, behind the Royals and Gujarat Titans. MS Dhoni’s team has won five of its first eight games. Meanwhile in today’s IPL action, Punjab Kings will take on Lucknow Super Giants.
