The History of Asia Cup: From Inception to the Present

The 16th edition of the Asia Cup is all set to commence on August 30th with the clash between hosts Pakistan and Nepal in Multan. This subcontinental tournament is one of the most exciting events in cricket. Its inception happened way back in 1984, with only three teams – India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka – participating in the inaugural edition of the Asia Cup. The Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah hosted the first edition of the Asia Cup.

The Inaugural Edition of the Asia Cup

The first-ever match of the Asia Cup was played on April 6th, 1984, between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.The Lankan side beat their opponents by five wickets to the curtain-raiser of the Asia Cup. In the second match, India squared off against Sri Lanka and beat them comprehensively by 10 wickets. The Sunil Gavaskar-led team bowled out Sri Lanka for just 96 runs in 41 overs in the first innings and then chased the target comfortably in 21.4 overs.

India and Pakistan, the Arch Rivals, Face Off

The third and final match of the inaugural Asia Cup saw India and Pakistan, two arch-rivals, face off. India scored 188/4 in the first innings with Surinder Khanna (54), Sandeep Patil (43), and Sunil Gavaskar (36) making significant contributions. Roger Binny and Ravi Shastri took three wickets each in the second innings, restricting Pakistan to just 134 runs. India won the tournament by topping the points table with eight points, while Sri Lanka finished second with four points. Pakistan did not win a single match.

The Run-Scorers and Wicket-Takers

Surinder Khanna of India scored the highest runs with 107 in two games, followed by Zaheer Abbas of Pakistan with 74 runs. Ravi Shastri finished as the highest wicket-taker with four scalps.The Asia Cup has come a long way since its inception in 1984. The tournament has grown bigger and better with every passing year. It has become a platform for players from different countries to showcase their skills and compete against each other.
