Will Jasprit Bumrah Play in the Asia Cup? Concerns Over Workload
Jasprit Bumrah, India’s leading fast bowler, has been released from the national team after playing three Tests in the series against England. This move is part of a plan to manage his workload and keep him fit for upcoming games. However, a big question is now being asked: Will Jasprit Bumrah play in the Asia Cup T20 tournament?
During the three Tests against England, Bumrah bowled 119.4 overs and picked up 14 wickets. He shone brightly in two matches, taking five wickets each time—at Headingley in the first Test and Lord’s in the third. But in the Manchester Test, he gave away over 100 runs in a single innings for the first time. Still, with 219 wickets in 48 Tests, Bumrah remains a key player for India.
Why Was Bumrah Released?
Before the England series began, Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the selection committee, made it clear that Bumrah would only play three Tests. This was to manage his workload carefully. The team wants to ensure he stays in top shape, as he is important for all types of cricket—Tests, T20s, and ODIs.
India’s next big event is the Asia Cup T20 tournament, set to happen in the UAE. After that, the team has a packed schedule. The Asia Cup ends on September 29, and just three days later, on October 2, the first Test against West Indies begins in Ahmedabad. Then, there’s another Test in New Delhi from October 10-14. In November, India will also play two Tests against South Africa.

The Tough Choice: Asia Cup or Tests?
The Indian team and selectors now face a hard decision. Should Jasprit Bumrah play in the Asia Cup, or should he rest for the Test matches? It’s tricky because Bumrah loves Test cricket, and these games offer points for the World Test Championship. On the other hand, the Asia Cup is a big T20 event, and India would love to have him there.
A source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared some thoughts. “It will be a tricky call, but Bumrah loves Test cricket, and there are World Test Championship points at stake,” the source said. “For T20s, he can play the series against New Zealand in January, which will help him prepare for the T20 World Cup.”
The source added, “If Bumrah plays in the Asia Cup and India reaches the final, he won’t be able to play the Test against West Indies in Ahmedabad. So, the question is, do you need him for West Indies, or should he play the Asia Cup after a month’s break and then take on South Africa in the two Tests? Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir will have to decide.”
What About ODIs and T20s?
Additionally, Bumrah is not expected to play many One Day Internationals (ODIs) until the T20 World Cup, which will be held in India. Instead, he might focus on the T20 series against New Zealand in January as a warm-up for the big tournament.
In short, whether Jasprit Bumrah plays in the Asia Cup is still up in the air. The tight schedule and his workload management make it a tough call. His love for Test cricket and the upcoming Tests against West Indies and South Africa will play a big role in the decision. The selectors, including Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir, will need to think carefully to keep Bumrah fit and ready for India’s important matches ahead.
