The 16th edition of the Asia Cup is likely to begin from October this year. The first edition of the Asia Cup was held in 1984 in Dubai after one year of founding of Asian Cricket Council. The tournament which consists of Asian teams was scheduled to be held every two years.
Over the years, the tournament has become an established competition, gaining a lot of popularity among Asian Countries such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka. In this article, we will take a look at the winners of the Asia Cup right from its launch in 1984.
The Asia Cup tournament first took place in 1984, after the one year establishment of the Asian Cricket Council. The tournament was held in Dubai with only 3 Asian countries- India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka participating in it.
India left their footsteps by marking the win in the first edition of the tournament. India had won the Inaugural season of the Asia Cup, defeating Sri Lanka in the final.
India has shown absolute dominance in the history of Asia Cup by winning the maximum titles. India has recorded victories in a total of 7 tournaments that dates back to 1984. India has won the Asia Cup titles 7 times, the maximum in following years. It marked victories in 1984, 1988, 1991, 1995, 2010, 2016, and 2018.
Whereas Sri Lanka is named 2nd in terms of winning the max Asia Cup titles. With 6 titles to its name, that came in the following years in 1986, 1997, 2004, 2008, 2014 and 2022. Sri Lanka became the second most successful team of the Asia Cup with 6 most titles to its name.
Another team that has been able to win the Asia Cup in addition to India and Sri Lanka is Pakistan, which has won the titles two times in following years 2000 and 2012.
