NBA – Grizzlies’ young core wants Andre Iguodala out of the team

Before the start of the pre-season, Andre Iguodala and Memphis Grizzlies reached an agreement that made sense for both the parties.

It’s well-documented that Iguodala was never keen on a move to Grizzlies, and didn’t turn up for the pre-season rehearsals. He worked on his own and asked Grizzlies to orchestrate a deal with a contender team. Iguodala’s talent is never in doubt, and any team would want a player like him on their rotational roster, but for some reason, no team could break a deal either with the Grizzlies or with Iguodala.

In a rather perfect world, Grizzlies would have preferred Iguodala to stick around and help the team move forward. Above all, he was seen as a mentor for their young core headed by Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson. What hurts Grizzlies the most is that Iguodala is set to pocket a cool $17.1 million this season even if he doesn’t do the Grizzlies shirt.

With the February 06 trade deadline fast approaching and the things far complicated at this stage, there is now tension brewing between the Grizzlies camp. No, not inside the active roster, but there are two factions now, it seems, one the young core, headed by Morant and on the other side is Iguodala.

24-year-old guard Dillon Brooks was not holding back after his 15-point, 5 assist and 4-rebound efforts in Grizzlies’ 96-82 win over Detroit Pistons. He said that he wishes Iguodala gets traded to another before the deadline and “show him really what Memphis is about.”

“A guy that’s on our team doesn’t want to be on our team,” Brooks said after scoring 15 points as the Grizzlies beat the visiting Pistons 96-82 on Monday. “I can’t wait until we find a way to trade him so we can play him, and I can show him what really Memphis is about,” Brooks said after the Pistons game.

Ja Morant, a frontrunner for the NBA rookie of the year this season, amplified that message via Twitter.

Grizzlies have exceeded expectations this season as they sit 8th in the Western Conference power rankings with a 25-25 return on the season.
