Lionel Messi’s masterclass goals help Inter-Miami FC to enter the Champions Cup Semi-final
Lionel Messi, arguably the best footballer in the world, once again proved his worth when it was just needed.
His club Inter Miami made an epic comeback to defeat the Los Angeles FC 3-1 and secure a spot in the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup on Wednesday.
With the aggregate score tied 2-2 at one point, Messi’s crucial penalty in the ending minutes sealed a historic 3-2 victory for his club, helping the home team to qualify for the next round. Messi produced a masterclass stroke to steer Inter Miami to their first ever Champions Cup semi-finals.
The David-Beckham co-owned Inter Miami looked dreaded with two goals down, in the tie against LAFC, fearing a high chance of elimination at one stage. It was then that Messi decided to turn the page and went on to score two goals.
Along with one assist and a penalty kick – the Argentine legend led the club to a stunning victory, with a 3-2 aggregate win. This game looked like a replica of the 2022 FIFA World Cup final, almost like a repeat performance, when Lionel Messi once again faced Hugo Lloris from the penalty spot with the exact same outcome too.
At a relatively older age of 37, the face of Argentina football continues to beat his age with his skill, timing and sheer brilliance. He still showcases a relentless drive and passion. Even in a high-intensity and energetic match like this, Lionel Messi was seen chasing down opponents, putting in crucial challenges, and showing the kind of determination that has made him a global icon for so many years.
The Inter-Miami FC was trailing 1-0 from the first leg, and soon after the second leg of the match, they found themselves in a difficult position again. Aaron Long scored a superb goal for his Los Angeles FC; but with the away goals rule in effect, Miami needed three goals to beat them and stay alive in the tournament.
Just before halftime, Messi delivered by pairing with his former Barcelona teammate, Luis Suarez. It was a much-needed goal in the 35th minute to make it 1-1 on the big and high-focused game night.
In the second half, Miami eventually took the lead with a fortunate goal and then subsequently Messi stepped up during the ending minutes of the game, calmly converting a referee-handed penalty to ensure a dramatic turnaround for his men and keep their hopes alive to continue in this championship.
“We gave it our all,” Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano expressed his happiness post the win. “We wanted it, we wanted to be in the semis, and I think it showed. … Many times, luck has to be on your side, and we had it.”
Ace performance at the club level is extremely important as it will give Messi the much-needed confidence to do well for his country Argentina during the FIFA World Cup slated for 2026. However, there are speculations of Messi not being a part of the national squad, as stated by sources close to Argentina’s Football Coach Lionel Scaloni.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, Lionel Messi has inspired millions of aspiring footballers and budding players with his dedication and craft, making him a household name in the world of football.
The Inter Miami club will now face the Vancouver Whitecaps in the semifinals later this month, as they will look to advance to the finals for the first time in the club’s history. As always, it was a bright and shining Messi’s night – another big stage and another big comeback from the best in the world.
