Copa America, Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi uncertain for Argentina’s Copa America quarterfinal against Ecuador?

The question on every Argentina fan’s mind is whether Lionel Messi will be fit to play in their crucial Copa America quarter-final against Ecuador. The 37-year-old superstar missed Argentina’s final group stage match against Peru due to a thigh injury, and his availability for the upcoming knockout game remains uncertain.

Lionel Messi, the 8-time Ballon d’Or winner, hasn’t taken any risks with his injury. With Argentina already securing top spot in their group, Coach Lionel Scaloni opted to rest him for the Peru match.

As Argentina gears up for their quarter-final showdown in Houston, Texas, all eyes are on Messi’s recovery. The team is doing everything possible to get him back on the field, and Messi himself is working hard to be ready.

When asked about Messi’s fitness, Coach Scaloni remained cautious but optimistic. “We’re taking things one step at a time,” he said. “We have another training session before the match, which will give us a clearer picture. We’re feeling positive, but the final decision will be based on what we see. I haven’t spoken to Leo directly about his condition yet, but I will. It’s important that he has time to recover and train as much as possible. We’ll make the call after that conversation.”

With Lionel Messi potentially out, the spotlight falls on Lautaro Martinez and Julian Alvarez, who have been Argentina’s attacking duo in his absence. Coach Scaloni acknowledges the difference Messi’s presence makes. “Leo has played well with both Julian and Lautaro,” he said. “But let’s be honest, things change when he’s not on the field. We’ll do everything we can to get him back, but if he’s not fit, we’ll find the best solution for the team. We need to take things one match at a time, and the team will adjust their strategy based on the opponent.”

This injury isn’t the only hurdle Lionel Messi has faced this year. He’s already missed 6 games for his club team, Inter Miami, due to muscle problems. These issues also forced him to withdraw from Argentina’s friendlies back in March. While Messi hasn’t scored yet in the 2024 Copa America, his overall international record remains impressive – 108 goals in 184 appearances.

The entire football world awaits news on Lionel Messi’s fitness. Will he be able to lead Argentina to victory in the quarter-final? Only time will tell but one thing is for sure Argentina will need to be at their best to overcome Ecuador and advance to the next stage of Copa America.
