Lionel Messi after finally winning the elusive FIFA World Cup trophy last year at Qatar, is on the way to reach another personal career milestone. The Argentinian legend is just a goal away from reaching the 700 goal mark which has only been achieved once by none other than Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portuguese striker is the only active footballer to have scored more than 700 goals in senior career and Messi needs one more to enter this unique and unattainable list. Messi if he is able to win the French Ligue 1 and UEFA Champions League this season, the 35-year-old could win his record 8th Ballon D’or trophy.
The PSG forward at the moment has 699 goals in club career for FC Barcelona and Paris Saint Germain. Just one goal will see him join Ronaldo in this record but the Portuguese is miles away with 800+ club goals. Although many would say that the debate and comparison is over as Messi has won the World championship, something that CR7 hasn’t.
If we dissect, the Argentine’s goals then he has scored 672 goals in 778 appearances for Barca and after an infamous exit from the club in 2021 Messi joined PSG and found the back of the net 27 times in 61 games. In total, the PSG number 30 has 699 goals in 839 club appearances.
PSG’s next Ligue 1 tie against Marseille will give Messi an opportunity to achieve the illustrious 700 club. His 699th club career goal came against Lille on Sunday to go 5 points clear at the top of Ligue 1 standings. Messi’s 90+ minute goal was the winning goal in Parisians 4-3 win at the Parc Des Princes.
