Ben Stokes Return for ODI World Cup Was His decision, Jos Buttler Confirms

Jos Buttler, England’s white-ball captain, emphasized that the decision for Ben Stokes to come out of retirement and rejoin the One Day International (ODI) format was entirely driven by the all-rounder himself. According to Buttler, the team management played a minimal role in this process. Stokes had retired from the 50-over format in July 2022, but he recently reversed his decision and was selected for England’s preliminary World Cup squad.

The revelation of Stokes’ intention to return came after the conclusion of the Ashes series. Buttler, having a strong rapport with Stokes, became the point of contact for this matter, as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) entrusted him with handling the situation. While there were several discussions between the two players, the final decision was left to Stokes.

In Buttler’s words, “To be honest, it was Ben’s call.” He further elaborated that he and Stokes had conversations about the matter some time ago and decided to let Stokes take the lead in approaching him if he wished to come back. Buttler expressed the team’s excitement about Stokes’ readiness to rejoin and highlighted that having him back in the squad was a significant boost.

Stokes is known for his independence and decision-making, which Buttler acknowledged. Being friends and long-time teammates, Buttler understood that pressuring Stokes to return wouldn’t be effective. Stokes’ competitive nature and desire to play in a World Cup played a significant role in his decision to return. Buttler expressed his delight that Stokes felt prepared for the challenge.

Stokes initially retired from ODIs due to workload management, citing a recurring knee injury. He aimed to use the gap between the Ashes series and the upcoming Test series against India for recovery. With his retirement now revoked, Stokes is expected to focus solely on batting due to his fitness concerns. While his bowling prowess will be missed, his batting stability adds a crucial element to the team.

Stokes’ return brings immense value to England’s batting lineup, particularly in crucial moments. Having been a key contributor during England’s previous title victory four years ago, his ability to excel under pressure both as a batter and in the field enhances England’s prospects of defending their title in the upcoming World Cup in India.

In conclusion, Buttler underlined Stokes’ personal agency in the decision to end his ODI retirement. The captain expressed his satisfaction at having Stokes back and highlighted the positive impact of his presence on the team’s performance.
