India vs Sri Lanka, Sharjah, 2000

Sri Lanka scored 299 runs in 50 overs after a steady start as their skipper Sanath Jayasuriya tore the bowlers to shreds for a fierce 189 (161 balls, 21 fours, and 4 sixes). Despite the large chase, India remained in the game courtesy of openers Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar.

But as soon as these two were out by Chaminda Vaas, the rest of the team fell in a domino effect as they were bowled for a mere 54 in 26.3 overs. Vaas took a wicket in the match and was the star of the second inning.

India vs Bangladesh, Port of Spain, 2007

The most humiliating loss in India’s ODI history is difficult to contest; it occurred during the group stage of the 2007 World Cup. India made the decision to bat first, but their star-studded batting order struggled miserably. As India’s innings ended for 191 with 3 balls remaining, Mashrafe Mortaza took 4 wickets, Abdur Razzaq took 3, and Mohammad Rafique took 3.

Tamim Iqbal, the Bangladesh opener, attacked the Indian bowlers early in the chase as Bangladesh easily attained their target. This match is still known as one of the biggest upsets in the history of ODIs.

India vs Pakistan, The Oval, 2017

India entered the final as a strong favourite, but when they decided to bowl first, they horribly executed their deliveries. Fakhar Zaman was the star of the innings, scoring a brilliant hundred as Pakistan raced wild and registered an impressive 338 for 4.

Even so, India’s batting lineup posed a threat to surpass that total, but the game was effectively over early on when Mohammad Amir bowled a brilliant spell and removed both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. India lost by 180 runs after being bowled out for 158. Hardik Pandya showed some fightback, but it was not meant to be for the Indian team that day.
