New Zealand vs Bangladesh

The one day series between New Zealand and Bangladesh is done and dusted and it’s time for the Tests series between the two sides, starting from 28 February 2019.

After whitewashing Bangladesh 3-0 in the ODI series, the Black Caps will look to repeat the same with the red ball as well, while, on the other side, Bangladesh, who haven’t enjoyed a single Test victory against New Zealand till now, would expect to create an upset, gaining some confidence from a below-par Sri Lanka’s recent maiden Test series victory in South Africa.

Squads:

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will miss out due to injury, reports are rife that Mushfiqur Rahim might not play the first Test as well owing to injury concerns. Also, Tamim Iqbal hasn’t had the best of comebacks, Bangladeshi batsman Mohammad Mithun has returned to the fold having suffered a hamstring injury during the second ODI at Christchurch.

New Zealand have announced their playing XI on the eve of the Test, with Matt Henry and Will Young being the two players to miss out. Todd Astle, who was picked in the squad over Ajaz Patel, is set to play his fourth Test in over six years.

The first Test between New Zealand and Bangladesh will begin from 28th February in Hamilton. Ideally suited for batting, average first and second innings scores are 304 and 314 respectively. What is usually regarded as a good batting pitch, skipper Williamson has stated that the surface looks different this year and is uncertain as to what he would do if win the toss.

Head to Head: Bangladesh has played thirteen Tests against New Zealand till now, of which they haven’t won a single Test, while New Zealand have won ten. Also, New Zealand have won 4 out of their last five Test matches while Bangladesh had lost their last Test series against West Indies 0-2.

Key Players-

ross taylor

New Zealand’s former skipper Ross Taylor is our best bet, given that the right-handed batsman has scored two centuries in the last two tests played in Hamilton. Tom Lathan will open the innings, followed by Williamson, Taylor, and Nicholls.

Tamim Iqbal, Mahmudullah, and Mominul Haque have all enjoyed considerable success in New Zealand as the trio will play a key role if Bangladesh have to win the first test against the Black Caps.

Pacer Tim Southee has been superb in Hamilton with 37 wickets to his name in 20 matches. He is the second highest wicket-taker here behind Vittori who has played twice as many matches as Southee.

Mustafizur Rahman will lead Bangladesh’s bowling department along with young seemer Ebadot Hossain. Young Hossain, who has replaced Taskin Ahmed due to injury, will play his debut test on Thursday.
