PCB Chief Election

Zaka Ashraf and Najam Sethi Set to Contest for PCB Chief

With just two weeks left as the Pakistan Cricket Board Chief, Najam Sethi finds himself amid another intense contest. This time, his challenger is Zaka Ashraf, who has previously contested against PCB Chief Sethi for the same position back in 2013-14. The rivalry between these two individuals is reignited as they vie for the opportunity to lead one of the most influential cricketing bodies in the country.

The race for the position of PCB Chief is currently underway, with Najam Sethi and Zaka Ashraf locked in a fierce battle for the role. Sethi, who has been serving as the chairman since Ramiz Raja’s removal in December 2022, is now facing a strong challenge from Ashraf.

With the tenure of the Management Committee nearing its end on June 21, Zaka Ashraf and Najam Sethi have relations with government officials to acquire this opportunity.

Najam Sethi, current PCB Chief and contestant for the new term, recently met with Shahbaz Sharif at his residence in Islamabad to seek his backing in the ongoing contest.

On the other hand, Zaka Ashraf has the support of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), another major political party in the country. PPP is also a coalition party with the current PM’s party, Pakistan Muslim League, and both party’s candidates make sure to back their candidate.

The battle for the PCB Chief position between Najam Sethi and Zaka Ashraf has not only been limited to their current contest but dates back to the legal actions they engaged in during 2013 and 2014.

Interestingly, former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif played a pivotal role in settling the issue by selecting Sethi as the PCB Chief. With both candidates contesting for the position again, the stakes are higher than ever.

The contest becomes even more intriguing as Pakistan’s two major coalition parties, PPP and PML, support different candidates. While PPP supports Ashraf, Sethi has the backing of PML. The political dynamics surrounding this race add an extra layer of suspense, making it even more compelling to see who will eventually ascend to the throne of PCB Chief.

Indeed, the upcoming decision regarding the PCB Chief position becomes even more fascinating due to the agreement made during the formation of the coalition government. It was agreed that both parties, PML and PPP, would nominate their respective candidates for various ministries.

Notably, the PPP party controls the IPC (Inter-Provincial Coordination) ministry, which encompasses sports in Pakistan. This gives Zaka Ashraf an advantage as he receives support from PPP, the party controlling the ministry directly related to sports.

However, Najam Sethi has the backing of the Prime Minister himself, which adds another layer of complexity to the situation. The contest between political affiliations and the power dynamics within the coalition government intensifies the intrigue surrounding the final decision on the PCB Chief.

It will be more interesting to see how these complex political dynamics shape the outcome and ultimately impact the future of Pakistan cricket.
