WPL 2023 : Delhi Capitals lose their 2nd while Gujarat Giants win only their 2nd league match in a close encounter at Brabourne!

The Inaugural Women’s Premier League action continued on Thursday night with Meg Lanning’s Delhi Capitals Women losing their 2nd league match as they crashed out in front of Sneh Rana’s Gujarat Giants. It was a really close encounter and went absolutely down the wire.

Tonight Gujarat registered only their 2nd victory of the season and 1st against DC Women. When both the teams met each other for the first time, Delhi Capitals’ were able to register a dominant 10-wicket win with Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning chasing 106 runs within the 8th over.

However, GG made amends and learned from their mistakes in the last match. After losing the toss and batting first, Gujarat Giants got off to a decent start barring Sophia Dunkley’s early departure for 4 runs off 6 balls. Her opening partner and Beth Mooney’s replacement Laura Woolvardt set the tone right from the start.

She partnered alongside Harleen Deol and stood for a partnership of 49 runs before Deol departed for 31 off 33. Woolvaardt then made a crucial partnership of 81 runs with Ashleigh Gardner. The former batter scored 57 off 45 while Gardner scored a quickfire 51 off 33 to help GG post 147 runs.

In response, Delhi Capitals Women did not start their inning in the best way possible. Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma were back to the dressing within the power play with DC 48/2 in 6 overs. Then Alice Capsey looked in great touch and was hitting the ball. She scored 22 off 11 but unfortunately got run-out by Sophia Dunkley.

Jemimah Rodrigues also failed to stick to the crease and was gone for just 1 run. Marizanne Kapp was DC Women’s best batter as she scored 36 runs but it wasn’t enough for the win. Jess Jonasson and Tania Bhatia shared 5-runs betwen them but deep into the final overs, Arundhati Reddy gave DC a good chance.

She batted alongside Shikha Pandey and both had a partnership of more than 30 runs with Reddy scoring most of the runs and Shikha was happy to keep rotating the strike Arundhati. However, as Reddy tried to play a big shot off Kim Garth, she found Sneh Rana in the covers and the match slipped further from DC’s hands.

With the wicket of Poonam Yadav, Gujarat bolwed out Delhi Capitals Women by 11 runs to deny them from getting to 10 points and play-off qualification.
