The Border-Gavaskar trophy 2023 promises to be a very competitive 4-match test series which will see visitors Australia vying for their first Series win in the longest format against India in since 2016/2017 BGT. Moreover, the Baggy greens have also failed to win a Test series in India since the Anil Kumble era in 2008/09.

As for India, this series holds a lot of significance because a spot in the finals of the ICC World Test championship is up for grabs and if they name the series by a margin of 2-1, they will once again meet Australia at Oval for the one match play-off.

Meanwhile, debutants Surya Kumar Yadav and KS Bharat were given their first test caps before Australia won the toss and elected to bat first. Both of the players have a wealth of experience under their belt in domestic cricket and Surya’s selection has come after a wonderful end to 2022 in white ball cricket.

Former India head coach Ravi Shashtri had predicted that Surya Kumar Yadav will make his debut today and Shahstri himself presented Yadav with his first Test cap in International cricket.

Meanwhile, KS Bharat whose record in First class Ranji Trophy cricket has been fairly impressive as he has scored 4707 runs in 135 Innings for Andhra Pradesh. He has been selected over Ishan Kishan and the 29-year-old is expected to have a near similar impact as Rishabh Pant at number 6.

Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara was the one who handed KS Bharat his debut Test cap. Currently Australia are getting into a firm position thanks to Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne’s partnership.
