There were a lot of new stars and emerging players for teams who were purchased for just a penny but were the match-winners for their respective teams. Whereas, there were a few players who were purchased or retained for a huge amount but gave nothing in return. This piece talks about five such players and the reason behind their underperformance.
IPL 2023: Top 5 Big Buys Who Didn’t Perform Well
1. Ben Stokes (Chennai Super Kings)
Stokes who is a very important player for his country and is even the test captain of England, is not a very renowned or a popular name in the IPL. He has not played a lot of matches also in the league. This year he was purchased by Chennai Super Kings for a huge sum of INR 16.25 crores but he played only two matches, got injured, and failed to make a comeback after that. He scored just 15 runs in the 2 matches and bowled one over.
2. Harry Brook (Sunrisers Hyderabad)
After some excruciating performances in International Cricket and the Pakistan Super League, Harry Brook was bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad team for a whopping INR 13.25 crores. Brook let the pressure of the price tag get heavy on him as he managed to score only 190 runs in the whole IPL season in 11 innings including a century. He was the biggest disappointment for the SRH franchise this season.
3. Shardul Thakur (Kolkata Knight Riders)
Shardul Thakur was traded by the Delhi Capitals to the Kolkata Knight Riders even before the auction for the 2023 season of the IPL for a sum of INR 10.75 crores. He was roped in by the KKR franchise hoping he will show his all-round skills and be the x-factor player for them. Shardul stood tall in that belief and started the season well by playing a match-winning knock against RCB but he really underperformed the whole season taking only 7 wickets in 11 matches.
4. Andre Russell (Kolkata Knight Riders)
KKR retained Andre Russel as their first priority choice this season and acquired his services for INR 16 crores. He was probably the biggest bummer for them as they expected him to win matches for them but he failed consistently. Russell managed to score only 227 runs this season playing all 14 matches. He took only 7 wickets in IPL 2023. Considering the fact that he is injury-prone and his career going downhill, it is highly likely that KKR will release him.
5. Sunil Narine (Kolkata Knight Riders)
Another KKR player who was bought for big bucks but failed to meet expectations is Sunil Narine. He was retained by KKR for INR 6 crores but gave almost nothing in return. Narine took only 11 wickets in 14 matches this season with an economy of almost 8. With two really good spinners growing in the KKR team, Sunil Narine’s IPL career looks nearer to the full stop.
