What is the super over?
A Superover is a method in cricket matches to decide the winner in case both teams score the same runs and the game goes tied in the second innings. In IPL, there have been 14 Super Overs played in the tournament’s history, and below is the list of all the super overs.

1. Kolkata Knight Riders vs. Rajasthan Royals 10th Match of IPL 2009 Season
Knight Riders and Rajasthan played the tenth game of the IPL 2009 season. Both teams had outstanding players, where Kolkata Knight Riders had strong batsman Chris Gayle while Rajasthan Royals had Yusuf Pathan, a stormy bowler.
Kolkata won the toss, decided to bowl, and stopped Rajasthan Royals on 150 runs. In the second innings, Rajasthan Royal also did not allow Kolkata Knight Riders to score more than 150 runs, so the match was tied, and fans witnessed the first super over in the history of IPL.
In the Super Over, Kolkata decided to bat first and sent Chris Gayle to the field, while Kamran Khan came for bowling from Rajasthan Royals. KKR scored 15 runs in the Super Over, in which Gayle hit three consecutive boundaries and set a target of only 16 runs by getting out on the last ball.
At that time, Yusuf Pathan was in great form and came out to bat in the super over for Rajasthan Royals. KKR handed the ball to Mendis as Mendis had already taken Pathan’s wicket, so he got a chance to encircle him, but Pathan proved KKR’s calculation wrong by hitting a six on the first and taking two runs on the second ball. He then drilled the six on the third ball and a four in the fine leg on the fourth to deliver Rajasthan Royal with a fantastic win in the super over.
2. Chennai Super Kings vs. Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab) 16th Match of IPL 2020 Season
Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab played Match 16 of IPL Season 2010 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, where CSK won the toss and elected to bowl first. At batting, Kings XI Punjab set a target of 136 runs in the first innings, while CSK failed to achieve this target in the second innings and, consequently, the match tied, and fans saw the second super over in the history of IPL.
While Albie Morkel and Matthew Hayden came out to bat for CSK in the Super Over, Punjab gave Rusty Theron the responsibility of the Super Over. In the first ball, Albie Morkel ran and took a single, while in the second ball, Rusty Theron took the wicket of Matthew Hayden. Coming at 3rd down, Suresh Raina took two runs in the third ball, and after hitting a six on the fourth ball, Raina was out on the 5th ball, and Chennai could only set a target of 9 runs only.
Punjab’s players Jayawardene and Yuvraj Singh had to score ten runs in 6 balls; Muttiah Muralitharan came for bowling from CSK, and Jayawardene hit a six on his first ball and got out on the second ball and went back to the pavilions. Yuvran came on the 3rd down and doted the third ball but hit a reverse boundary on the 4th ball to win the team in the super over.
3. Sun Risers vs. Royal Challengers Bangalore 7th Match of IPL Season 2013
Sunrisers and Royal Challengers Bangalore played their 7th match of the IPL season 2013 at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad. The game ended in a no-conclusion, and the panel called for a Super Over.
From Hyderabad, Thisara Parera and Cameron White took over the batting in Super Over, while RCB handed over the responsibility of bowling to Vinay Kumar. Thisara Parera was on strike, and Vinay was in front to bowl. Vinay tried to hit a yorker, resulting in a no-ball.
Sunrisers Hyderabad got two runs without any ball, one for no ball and one for a single. Vinay gave only one run in the free hit and only one run in the second ball. Cameron White hit two sixes in the 4th and 5th by dotting the third ball and took two runs on the sixth ball to set a target of 21 runs for RCB.
Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli handled the strings for RCB in the second innings of the Super Over. Gayle took two runs on the first ball and a single on the second ball, and on the third ball, Virat hit a boundary in the fine leg and took a single on the 4th ball. Gayle hit a six on the 5th ball, but seven runs were needed in the last ball, and RCB could not win the match in the super over, and victory went to Hyderabad.
4. Royal Challengers Bangalore vs. Delhi Daredevils 21st Match of IPL Season 2013
Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore played the 21st match of the IPL season 2013 at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore. Delhi Daredevils set a target of 152 runs in the first innings, while Royal Challengers Bangalore could not score more than 152 runs, and both teams moved forward to super over.
RCB scored 15 runs in the Super Over and delivered Delhi a target of 16 runs, which Delhi could not make, and RCB won the Super Over by four runs.
5. Kolkata Knight Riders vs. Rajasthan Royals 19th Match of IPL Season 2014
In the first innings of the super over, KKR scored 11 runs and gave Rajasthan Royals a target of 12 runs. The same Rajasthan could not score more than 11 runs, and this super over was also tied, but Rajasthan Royals have declared champions for more boundaries.
6. Rajasthan Royals vs. Kings XI Punjab 18th Match of IPL Season 2015
Rajasthan Royals Vs. Kings XI Punjab played the 18th match of the IPL 2015 season in Ahmedabad, where Kings XI Punjab set a target of 16 runs for RR by scoring 15 runs in 6 balls in the first innings of the super over. Rajasthan Royals failed to win the super over, and Kings XI Punjab won this super over match by nine runs.
7. Gujarat Lions vs. Mumbai Indians 35th Match of IPL season 2017
Gujarat Lions scored 153 runs while Mumbai Indians could not score more than 153, and the match was tied. Mumbai Indians started the super over and set a target of 11 runs. But Mumbai had excellent bowling, MI won the super over by five runs, and Gujarat Lions had to face defeat.
8. Delhi Capitals vs. Kolkata Knight Riders 10th Match of IPL season 2019
Delhi Capitals vs. Kolkata Knight Riders played the 10th match of the IPL 2019 season at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, in which Delhi won the toss and decided to field first. KKR scored a massive score of 185 runs, Delhi Capitals scored 185 runs, and the Match was Tied.
Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer scored ten runs with a single and double in the first inning of the super over. Then Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell could not make KKR win in the super over and lost by three runs.
9. Mumbai Indians vs. Sunrisers Hyderabad 51st Match of IPL season 2019
Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad played this game at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Sunrisers Hyderabad scored 163 runs in the first innings, and MI tied the match by scoring 163 runs in the second inning.
Manish Pandey and Mohammad Nabi started the super over for Sunrisers Hyderabad, while on the other side, Bumrah limited the team to eight runs. Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard hit nine runs in 3 balls, leading MI to win.
10. Delhi Capitals vs. Kings XI Punjab 2nd Match of IPL season 2020
Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab played the 2nd match of the IPL season 2020 at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. KXIP captain K L Rahul won the toss, decided to field, and contained Delhi Capitals for 157 runs with eight wickets.
The same Delhi Capitals only let KXIP score 157 runs, and the game turned to super over. KXIP started the Super Over with the bat, while Rabada, who was bowling for Delhi, bundled out Punjab by taking two consecutive wickets on two runs. Now Delhi needed only three runs, which they made in only two balls and won the victory.
11. Royal Challengers Bangalore vs. Mumbai Indians 10th Match of IPL season 2020
On 28th September, in the 10th match of the IPL 2020 season, RCB and MI played at Sheikh Zayed Stadium Dubai; Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to field first.
Royal Challengers Bangalore scored a target of 201 runs in 20 overs in the first innings. In contrast, in the second innings, Mumbai Indians tied the match by scoring 201 runs with the loss of 5 wickets, and the board again decided to super over.
Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya scored only eight runs from Mumbai Indians in the super over. In the second innings of the Super Over, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers went to the last ball to win the match, which was undoubtedly a nail-biting match.
12. Sunrisers Hyderabad vs. Kolkata Knight Riders 35th Match of IPL Season 2020
The 35th Match of IPL 2020 Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders match of IPL 2020 season was exciting as SRH could score only two runs in this match, which also went towards super over. KKR scored 163 runs in the first innings at the loss of 5 wickets, and the SRH team tied the match, scoring 163 runs with the loss of 6 wickets.
SRH could hit only two runs in the super over. In the second innings, KKR chased down the target of 3 runs in 4 balls to seal the victory.
13. Mumbai Indians vs. Kings XI Punjab 36th Match of IPL season 2020
IPL 2020 36th IPL match was played between Punjab and Mumbai on 18th October at Dubai International stadium. In the first inning, Mumbai set a target of 176 runs for Punjab, while Punjab tied the match with a brilliant performance in the second innings, and the game went for a super over.

On 25th April 2021, the 20th Match of IPL season 21 occurred at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai. In this Match, SRH scored only seven runs in the super over, and Delhi Capitals easily won the match.
