IND Vs AUS 3rd ODI : Will Surya Kumar Yadav still be the favorable option for India when Cricket World cup comes?

Suryakumar-Yadav

It is the year of the ICC 50-over Cricket world cup and India suffered a jolting loss against Australia in the 3rd ODI to lose the first ODI series of 2023. At the MA Chidambaram Stadium last night, India somewhat received another reality check as the Baggy greens clinch the series by 2-1.

Steve Smith’s side exposed India’s woes in the Batting line-up especially in the middle order. Not much had changed since the 2nd ODI but we can say that it was rather an improved performance to some extent. At least the Indian players fought and tried to take it deep and gave themselves a chance.

However, one batter who did not back himself or gave himself a chance was the explosive Surya Kumar Yadav. His explosiveness went missing in the entire 3-match ODI series as he was out on his very first ball for a Golden duck on all 3 occasions.

Barring his first 6 ODI outings, Surya has been more or less the same. In one word – Disappointment. There is doubt around his aura and ability in T20Is but his technique is definitely not good enough for ODIs at the present moment. In 23 ODI matches, Surya has managed to score 433 runs and his highest score has been 64.

Whenever he has gone big in One-Dayers, 53 and 64, they have come against relatively weaker sides – Sri-Lanka and West Indies. In 2023, Surya has not even scored 50 runs combined in 6 ODI innings. The 32-year-old broke into the scene as the top contender in the Indian middle-order but what are we down with now?

His average is down at 24.05 and whenever the team needed him, Surya’s sun has always set unfortunately. One thing is certain that he will not be able to survive with the same type of technique as well as intent when playing the longer formats because its not always going hard and big.
