Hockey India League Player Auction: Harmanpreet and Hardik breaches ₹70 Lakhs

The Hockey India League (HIL) player auction kicked off with a flurry of excitement as India’s star players Harmanpreet Singh and Hardik Singh were the most sought-after by various franchises.

Harmanpreet and Hardik Lead the Bidding:

Harmanpreet Singh, the captain of the Indian hockey team, was signed up by the JSW Sports-owned Soorma Hockey Club for a whopping Rs 78 lakh. His deputy, Hardik Singh, went to UP Rudras for Rs 70 lakh. The duo’s popularity and exceptional skills made them the top targets for the franchises.

Abhishek’s Surprise Bid:

A surprise came in the form of Indian forward Abhishek, who was signed by Bengal Tigers for Rs 72 lakh. This bid split Harmanpreet and Hardik, creating a three-way bidding war. Abhishek’s consistent performances and his inclusion in the Asian Games and Olympics squads have earned him recognition as a valuable asset to the Indian team.

Paris 2024 Olympic Bronze Medalists:

The HIL player auction began with the Paris 2024 Olympic Games bronze medallists, and it was no surprise to see Hardik and Harmanpreet attract intense bidding. Harmanpreet, a world-renowned drag-flicker, was the top scorer at Paris 2024 with 10 goals. Former India captain Manpreet Singh was signed up by Vizag franchise Team Gonasika for Rs 42 lakh. Other players who attracted significant interest from the franchises included Gurinder Singh, Surender Kumar, and Simranjeet Singh.

Auction Details:

The HIL player auction will unfold over three days. The men’s auction will take place on October 13th and 14th, followed by the women’s auction on October 15th. Each franchise will build a 24-player squad, comprising 16 Indian players (including four junior players) and 8 foreign players.
