Since the match was played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, which offers an excellent pitch for the batters and where dew plays a huge role, the English captain won the toss and did the right thing by asking South Africa to bat first. England had a target of 230 runs to chase within 20 overs and keep the tournament alive. Even though the match was played in Mumbai, everyone ruled England out because of the score and the excellent bowling lineup that South Africa possessed. Although the England batters were in a different mood, they came out all guns blazing with the intent of chasing this down.

Jason Roy and Alex Hales opened the batting for England when Roy, with his innings of 43 runs off just 16 balls, gave England the best start possible. Hales also scored 17 runs in just seven balls. When these two got out, England seemed in a spot of bother, but then came Joe Root, and he absolutely smashed the bowlers all around the park.

Root had a few England batters play the role of anchor besides him, but he kept going from one end and took England really close in the chase with his fabulous innings of 83 runs in 44 balls. He scored six boundaries and four maximums in his inning that day.

With the help of these innings by England batters and 20 wides from the South African bowlers, England chased down the target and created history. The score of 230 runs that day by England in the chase is their highest ever team total in the history of the T20 World Cup.
