3. Michael Atherton 

Former England Captain Michael Atherton is another name in the list. His average might not be very impressive, but the number of runs he scored was great. He got 729 runs, at an average of 40.50, with 2 centuries and 3 fifties. 

2. Joe Root

1. Denis Compton 

With 3 centuries and 4 fifties, Compton scored 818 runs in only 8 Test matches. There is no doubt about the fact that he was one of the greatest Batsmen of all time, in his era. He was certainly a cult figure of his time. 

It looks like Joe Root is having a good chance to get on the top of the list. That is because he is only 28 runs behind.
