Manchester United dealt with a major challenge in the previous round of this competition, and still managed to secure progression. They were on the road, and at the Stamford Bridge of all places.

Despite the transfer ban, Chelsea under club legend Frank Lampard were never going to make it easy for the Devils. Still, riding on top of two Marcus-Rashford goals, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men registered a 1-2 win, and in the process gave a major blow to Chelsea’s season. Talk about killing two birds with one stone.

Meanwhile, Colchester United were on the road in the last round, and had locked horns with an opposition from their same league, Crawley. At first, it seemed as if the hosts were destined to get to the Quarters.

But their 20th minute goal was soon equalized by the guests, and later, Colchester added two more to complete their impressive comeback win.

However, this match-day, they are about to bite off more than what they can chew. Keep note that Colchester are part of the League Two, the fourth tier in English football, while the Red Devils are legends of the English top flight.

On top of that, the venue for the game is the dreaded Old Trafford, lovingly called by loyal fans as the ‘Theatre of Dreams’. Colchester should consider themselves lucky if they are able to return home without being subjected to a humiliating loss.

Moreover, United are facing tough competition in the Premier League at the moment, and a top-four finish looks unlikely at the moment. Even the Europa League is filled to the brim with hardened competitors.

Obviously, this will make them concentrate more on domestic cup competitions, and this being the Quarters of the Carabao, fans will expect nothing but the title at the end of the season.

Furthermore, United hold a 100% winning record against this opponent, and have never had their defense breached in an h2h encounter.

On top of that, Colchester were winless in three of their previous four games, and in ten of their last fifteen on the road. Coupling all these information together, it could easily be said that the League Two outfit, Colchester, are in for a tough night at the Old Trafford this Wednesday.

And as such, count on Manchester United to win both the halves handsomely, and take no chances with their tickets for the semis.

Going on, regarding our second pick – understand that this is a knockout. Colchester may be huge underdogs, but they certainly will not be coming with the intent to lose. Moreover, there would be no point in playing for a draw for both teams.

This means, in the second half, if Colchester is trailing, they will abandon their defenses, and adapt an all-out attack mode. This will either result in a goal for them, or multiple goals for the hosts due to lapses in defense.

Also, if United is held to a draw or are trailing at half time, they will adapt such a style too. The Carabao Cup Quarters will have no extra time, and draws will be settled by penalties after ninety minutes.

Solskjaer’s men would definitely not want to depend on the shootout, and will opt to settle things in regular time itself. As said earlier, if United do not have a lead at half time, they will come out with guns blazing, and either Colchester could take advantage of this and score goals, or relentless pressure from the hosts will result in goals for them.

Anyhow, it’s building up to be a goal-filled second half.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has vowed to rotate his side for this game. United could usher back Diogo Dalot from a two-month injury lay-off, while youngsters James Garner, Brandon Williams and Mason Greenwood are all likely to start after featuring versus AZ Alkmaar last week.

Solskjaer has used the cup competitions as a chance to give fringe players game time this season. Harry Maguire and Anthony Martial started against Alkmaar but the Norwegian may play an even weaker side against the League Two side at Old Trafford.

He gave a strong indication that wholesale changes will be made from the team that drew 1-1 with Everton. United’s next Premier League game is away at Watford on Sunday.

MUN VS CLC: Best players

Manchester United FC

Mason Greenwood has been the man for United to call upon in rotated squads this season and should get another start on Wednesday.

The teenager has seven goals across all competitions so far this season, including two in the Premier League, making him the division’s youngest scorer in 2019/20 so far.

Greenwood came off the bench against Everton on Sunday to earn United a draw and, after the game, was hailed by Gary Neville as being a better finisher than Marcus Rashford.

If United are to avoid following Palace and Tottenham, they’ll need Greenwood to live up to Neville’s high praise.

Key stat: Jadon Sancho (11) and Gabriel Martinelli (8) are the only teenagers in Europe’s top five leagues to score more goals this season.

Colchester United FC

A former Chelsea academy product, turned West Ham man, Frank Nouble will get his chance to knock out a third Premier League side in the Carabao Cup this season.

The 28-year-old has featured in all but two of Colchester’s games across all competitions this season and is ever-present in the Carabao Cup.

Nouble recorded assists in the wins over Swindon and Crawley and converted his penalties in the shootout wins over Palace and Tottenham.

Key stat: Frank Nouble has been directly involved in nine goals across all competitions this season.
