Hull City faces Chelsea in Saturday’s FA Cup tie at the KCOM Stadium. Can Chelsea avoid a cup giant killing against Hull City in the 4th Round?

Chelsea to shuffle their pack?

Chelsea travel to take on Hull City in Saturday evening’s televised offering, hoping to avoid the embarrassment of being dumped out of the FA Cup by lower league opponents Hull City.

The Blues have plenty of frustration to exorcise this weekend having surrendered the lead twice on Tuesday evening at home to 10-man Arsenal, though their heavy Premier League workload could see them field an understrength team at the KCOM Stadium.

Chelsea have a rigorous top-flight schedule that includes impending successive fixtures against Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United – a tough run that could push Frank Lampard into resting some of his biggest stars at Hull.

Chelsea’s defensive struggles

Even with a full complement of players available, Lampard has been unable to find a defensive formula that works for Chelsea this term however, and after their lapses at the back on Tuesday, the Blues’ record reads a dismal three clean sheets in 15 games in all competitions.

Those numbers will be a source of motivation for Hull City manager Grant McCann and his players, and against a shuffled backline, the Tigers will back themselves to tear some holes.

Hull failed to register in each of their last two home matches against Nottingham Forest and Fulham, though their return in front of goal on their own patch has generally been decent this term.

The Tigers hit the net in eight of their 12 home games since the start of the campaign, averaging 1.5 goals per 90 minutes in total over that period.

We think Hull can harness the energy from the home crowd to score again against a notoriously porous, and almost certainly weakened Chelsea rearguard this weekend, though their chances of keeping the Premier League giants out at the other end feel incredibly slim.

Hull managed to keep just two clean sheets in their last 11 games, while Chelsea have proved a potent attacking force on the road this season, scoring in all but two of the 16 matches they have contested away from Stamford Bridge since last summer.

HUL VS CHE: Head-to-head

The last time these two met, Chelsea recorded a huge 4-0 win, which was also in the FA Cup.

The combined scoreline for the prior seven fixtures is 17-2, in favor of Chelsea.

Disregarding a 1-1 draw in 2010, Chelsea have won every single one of their visits to this venue since 1999.

Chelsea scored a total of 21 goals from the last seven h2h encounters at this stadium.

HUL VS CHE: Predicted starting lineup

Hull City: Ingram; Lichaj, Burke, Tafazolli, McLoughlin; Batty, Leonardo; Bowen, Kane, Wilks; Eaves.

Chelsea: Caballero; James, Tomori, Zouma, Emerson; Barkley, Kovacic, Gilmour; Pedro, Batshuayi, Hudson-Odoi.

HUL VS CHE: Best players

Hull City: Tom Eaves

Tom Eaves was Hull’s hero in the FA Cup third round, scoring a hat-trick against Rotherham, and if the Tigers are to have any hopes of getting past Chelsea he needs to be in similar form.

Hull have scored just four goals in their past 10 games with Chelsea, with two of those coming in a bizarre 3-2 defeat during the 2014/15 season when the Tigers initially fought back from 2-0 down thanks to some generosity from Thibaut Courtois.

Eaves was rested for the defeat to Derby last weekend so will be fresh for Saturday’s match and will be hoping to continue his FA Cup form having struggled for goals in the Championship.

Key stat: Tom Eaves has scored seven goals in all competitions for Hull this season, with three of those coming in the FA Cup third round.

Chelsea: Michy Batshuayi

With Tammy Abraham out, at least for this game, through injury and Olivier Giroud out of favour, Michy Batshuayi will be the one to lead the line for Chelsea against Hull.

The Belgian has not been in the greatest of form recently, struggling to impact when coming on as a substitute, but now is his time. A good performance against Hull could see Lampard trust in Batshuayi and allowing Abraham more time to recover, for the good of Chelsea and England.

The expectancy for Chelsea to rely on Batshuayi over the coming weeks has brought a slight rise in his Football Index value, from 89p on Tuesday – when Abraham was injured against Arsenal – to 92p.

Key stat: Michy Batshuayi has scored five goals in nine FA Cup games for Chelsea.
