Everton and Arsenal could both have new managers in charge by the time they meet at Goodison Park in Saturday’s early Premier League kick-off.

Mikel Arteta is closing in on a three-and-a-half-year deal to become Arsenal’s next permanent boss, but Freddie Ljungberg is still expected to be on the touchline as interim coach given how little time Arteta will have to prepare.

As for Everton, the Toffees are closing in on appointing Carlo Ancelotti – though like Arsenal, the game should come too soon for the Italian to be in the dugout.

That means Duncan Ferguson will be looking to take his unbeaten League record as caretaker manager to three games after beating Chelsea and drawing at Manchester United – and given Arsenal’s defensive woes, the hosts will be confident of a result.

Everton have shown of late that they are more than capable of troubling the bigger sides in the division, taking four points off Chelsea and Manchester United this month.

The Toffees have had a woeful season, but seem to lift themselves for big games – and Arsenal will have to be wary. The Gunners are more than capable of leaving Goodison with three points, but cannot afford the same defensive lapses they have shown time and again.

Everton will come into this match sitting in 16th place in the table following the work of Duncan Ferguson and co. They have four points from their last two league games, seeing them crawl out of the drop zone. They sit three points above it now, and they will hope that the worst is now behind them as they seek to climb up toward the mid table or beyond, where many of their fans feel they should be.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have some climbing of their very own to do as well. The Gunners will enter this weekend in tenth place after they once again lost last weekend. It’s just the latest in a line of disappointments, and the temporary reign of Ljungberg has not really paid off for them. They are still only seven points behind Chelsea for fourth, but it’s very hard to see them finishing in the UCL slots given their current form.

At home, the Toffees have taken a decent amount of points so far. In fact, 13 of their 13 total have come at Goodison Park, giving them more hope than they otherwise would have had. In their last five, they have two wins and six points to give them some momentum. As for the Gunners, they have two wins and three draws in eight away outings to give them a reasonable nine points so far. However, they have just one road win in five, so they are struggling yet again on their travels.

EVE VS ARS: Best players

Everton

If Everton want to grab goals here, the man most likely to do that is going to be Richarlison. Whether he starts from up top or out wide, the Brazilian is a huge danger man that can produce havoc in a back line. He has six goals and two assists so far to lead the team. Meanwhile, Dominic Calvert-Lewin should also lead the line. He’s not the most consistent, but he always gives a hardworking shift and can punish a back line if afforded the time and space to do so. Five goals show that much to be true.

Arsenal

It’s hard to fathom where the Gunners would be if it were not for the exploits of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Gabonese forward has plundered 11 goals for them. If not for him, they could seriously be in relegation trouble, such has been their wayward form. Out wide, Nicolas Pepe is starting to show signs of his class. He’s now got two goals and three assists on the season and is closer to proving he’s worth all of the cash the club stumped up in order to bring him in.
