Chelsea and Bayern Munich face off in Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 clash in a repeat of the 2012 final – a night Blues fans will remember fondly. The odds were stacked against Chelsea then, but this tie is arguably even more one sided as the Bundesliga outfit’s wealth of experience is matched against youthful naivety. Frank Lampard’s side scraped through Group H as last season’s semi-finalists – Ajax – dropped into the Europa League, and were left to rue their second half collapse in a 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea
Tammy Abraham returned to action on Saturday, playing 20 minutes off the bench in the win against Spurs. However, Lampard will surely want to reward Giroud with a start after his fine display. Christian Pulisic and N’Golo Kante are both still out but Callum Hudson-Odoi could push for a return. Goalkeeper Willy Caballero looks to have done enough to retain his place ahead of Kepa Arrizabalaga, while Ross Barkley will be hopeful he can retain his place in midfield. The Blues have been noticeably poor at home this season, struggling against even teams like West Ham and Southampton. Bayern figures to be arguably its toughest test of the season with so much on the line. The plus for the Blues is they got Tammy Abraham back from injury on Saturday as he came on as a substitute against Spurs. Christian Pulisic is still injured, as is N’Golo Kante. The Blues will need a full team performance to get a result they are happy with with holding shape in defense being key.
Bayern Munich
The 3-2 win over Paderborn was ugly, but the club had to deal with suspensions to Benjamin Pavard and Jerome Boateng. The team looks healthy and sharp with a strong squad on paper traveling to London for this one. Bayern has scored at least three goals in six of its last seven matches in all competition, and they should be able to put a couple away here especially if Chelsea continues to use backup goalkeeper Willy Caballero over inconsistent world-record signing Kepa Arrizabalaga.
