In Wednesday’s Premier League clash at the Emirates, Mikel Arteta searches for his first Premier League win as manager of Arsenal when they face old rivals Manchester United.

Arsenal FC

It was yet more disappointment for new Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta on Sunday as he continued his hunt for his first Premier League win. A late comeback from Chelsea saw that hunt extended as they lost 2-1 at the Emirates, which follows on from back to back draws against Everton and Bournemouth to make for a thoroughly underwhelming start for Arteta.

The Gunners now sit 12th in the table, closer to the relegation zone than they are to the top six. This truly is a club in crisis right now, but victory against their old rivals Manchester United may be the catalyst they need to turn their season around.

Unfortunately for them, victory is not looking particularly likely. Arsenal are winless in their last six home league games, conceding 12 goals in the process and losing each of their last three. They have picked up just 13 points from their 10 home games so far, leaving them with the 6th worst home record in the competition.

Manchester United FC

Manchester United aren’t exactly flying high this season, but there have been marked signs of improvement recently. A 2-0 win against Burnley on Saturday leaves them just four points adrift of the top four, and they have lost only one of their last nine Premier League matches.

Away from home they have won three of their last six league games, but the most telling stat comes from their record against the traditional Big Six. They have lost none of their five matches against the other Big Six sides, winning three of them. This includes being the only side so far to take a point off Liverpool and victories against Spurs, Manchester City and Chelsea.

In a nutshell, Manchester United know exactly how to win against teams that are willing to attack them, and Arsenal certainly fall into this category. This approach plays into the Red Devils’ hands, and Arsenal’s defence simply looks incapable of dealing with any sort of pressure. They have kept just one league clean sheet at home this season and have shipped seven goals in their last three games there.

To make matters worse, the likes of Sead Kolasinac, Rob Holding, Kieran Tierney and Sokratis are likely to miss out through injury, leaving the error prone duo of David Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi to pair up in the centre of defence.

Arsenal have, however, scored in all but one of their home games this term, and Manchester United have only kept one clean sheet away from home this term. The visitors have averaged exactly two goals per game against their fellow Big Six opponents this term.

ARS VS MUN: Predicted starting lineup (XI)

Arsenal: Leno; Maitland-Niles, Mustafi, Luiz, Saka; Torreira, Guendouzi; Pepe, Ozil, Aubameyang; Lacazette.

Manchester United: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Lindelof, Shaw; Pereira, Matic, Pogba; James, Martial, Rashford.

ARS VS MUN: Best players

Arsenal:

Mesut Ozil

His Arsenal career looked over under Emery but Mesut Ozil finds himself once again in the Gunners team and has proven just how good he can be.

In the draw with Bournemouth, Ozil was Arsenal’s best creator and he continued his upturn in form against Chelsea, doing his bit in both attack and defence – which is something he had previously been criticised for.

Taken off midway through the second half, Ozil is likely to start against Manchester United and Arsenal need someone of his ability to cut through the Red Devils‘ defence.

Key stat: Mesut Ozil (six) has created more chances than any other Arsenal player since Mikel Arteta took charge.

Manchester United:

Marcus Rashford

At the start of the season, there were worries about where Manchester United’s goals would come from, following the sale of Romelu Lukaku. However, Marcus Rashford has stepped up magnificently.

The Englishman has already beaten his personal best in the Premier League with 12 goals after just 20 games and has scored five more than any other Manchester United player.

His next aim will be to improve on his record against Arsenal having gone eight matches without scoring past the Gunners, after grabbing two in his first game and Premier League debut.

Key stat: No Englishman has scored more Premier League goals this season than Marcus Rashford (12).
