Harry Brook Pulls Out of Delhi Capitals IPL Deal, Faces Potential Two-Year Ban

Harry Brook, an England batsman, has decided not to play for the Delhi Capitals in the upcoming IPL 2025. This is the second year in a row that he has withdrawn from his IPL contract with the team. He said that he needs to focus on playing for England. However, this decision could lead to a two-year ban from the IPL.

Harry Brook apologized to the Delhi Capitals team and their fans. He said that playing for England is his main priority. He needs time to rest and prepare for the upcoming England series.

There is also talk that Brook could become the new captain of England’s white-ball team. This is because Jos Buttler might step down after the team’s poor performance in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Ben Stokes and Harry Brook are being considered for the captaincy.

Brook explained his decision on social media. “I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL. I apologize unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters,” he wrote. “It is a really important time for England cricket and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series.”

He also said, “In order to do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date. I know not everyone will understand, and I don’t expect them to, but I have to do what I believe is right and playing for my country remains my priority and focus.”

England has important cricket series coming up. In June, they will play a Test series against India at home. Then, from November to January, they will travel to Australia for the Ashes series. These are big events for England cricket, and Brook wants to be fully prepared.

Last year, in 2024, Brook also withdrew from the IPL. At that time, it was because his grandmother had passed away.

Now, because of the IPL’s new rules, Brook faces a potential two-year ban. The IPL introduced this rule after many overseas players, especially English players, withdrew from their contracts at the last minute in recent years. The IPL sent a note to all franchises in September, stating that any overseas player who withdraws after being picked in the auction will be banned for two seasons. The only exception is for injury or medical reasons confirmed by the player’s home board.

In 2023, Brook played in the IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He scored 190 runs in 11 matches, including a century against Kolkata Knight Riders. The Delhi Capitals team has not yet announced a replacement for Brook.

The IPL 2025 will start on March 22. The first match will be between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens.
