ENG vs PAK 4th T20: England clinch series with dominant victory against Pakistan

The 4th and final T20I between England and Pakistan (ENG vs PAK), played on May 30th, 2024 at The Oval in London, saw England secure a convincing 7-wicket victory and clinch the series 2-0. While the first and third matches were abandoned due to rain, this encounter displays some great power hitting and exceptional bowling.

Pakistan opted to bat first after winning the toss. Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam provided a decent start, putting on a 59-run partnership. However, England’s bowling attack, led by the experienced Adil Rashid and Jofra Archer, made a strong comeback and crumbled Pakistani batting line-up. Rashid picked up the wicket of Rizwan and Archer picked Babar Azam.

The middle order batters failed to capitalize on the foundation set by the openers. A flurry of wickets saw Pakistan slump from 65/1 to 86/5 within a short span. Only Usman Khan (38 runs) and Iftikhar Ahmed (21 runs) offered some resistance. Eventually, Pakistan were bowled out for a below-par total of 157 runs in their allotted 20 overs. England’s bowlers showcased excellent discipline, with Adil Rashid (2/27) and Mark Wood (2/35) being the pick of the attack.

Chasing a modest target of 158 runs, England openers Phil Salt and Jos Buttler started aggressively. Salt smashed a quick-fire 45 runs off just 24 deliveries before being dismissed by Haris Rauf. Buttler, the Player of the Series, continued his good form, scoring a well-paced 39 runs. Although both openers departed within a span of few overs, England maintained control of the chase.

Jonny Bairstow (28* runs) and Harry Brook (17* runs) ensured there were no further hiccups, guiding England comfortably home in the 16th over. Pakistan’s bowlers, especially Haris Rauf who claimed 3 wickets for 38 runs, tried his best to restrict the scoring, but England’s batting depth proved too strong.

  • Pakistan’s Batting Woes: Pakistan’s batting line-up, barring a few exceptions, failed to score runs. Their over-reliance on the top order and the inability of the middle order to capitalize on starts were key factors in their below-par total.
  • Series Win for England: With this victory, England secured a convincing 2-0 series win over Pakistan. This win give a confidence to the English team as they prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Both England and Pakistan will use this series as a learning experience as they prepare for the T20 World Cup 2024. England will be looking to carry their winning momentum forward, while Pakistan will need to address their batting frailties and bowling inconsistency.
