Aston Villa faces Leicester City in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final clash. After a 1-1 draw in the first leg, both Aston Villa and Leicester will be hunting for an EFL Cup Final appearance.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa’s Third Round FA Cup exit at the hands of Fulham earlier this month gave them a rare weekend off this week; but now their attentions turn towards a potential cup final as they head into the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.

The Villans looked all set to be carrying an advantage into this clash until Kelechi Iheanacho’s late equaliser at the King Power Stadium and, while they can take heart from that performance, they will certainly be aware of the quality Leicester possess.

Not only that, but the hosts have only won one of their last five competitive games; even at home they have won just half their matches this season.

Leicester City

Leicester, unlike their opponents, weren’t afforded the weekend off as a significantly weakened team saw off the threat of Brentford in the FA Cup Fourth Round. However, with an appearance at Wembley at stake, we can expect a stronger starting line-up from Brendan Rodgers on Tuesday.

The Foxes may not be in the sensational form that lifted them to second in the Premier League right now, but their quality can’t be ignored. They have still won five of their last eight outings, so are far from an out-of-form team.

Surprisingly, they seem even better away from home, too. They have won eight of their last 11 competitive away days, including that incredible 9-0 drubbing of Southampton. That scoreline, while anomalous, is a good illustration of Leicester’s strengths. They have scored in all but one of their trips away this season, netting an average of 2.29 goals per game.

However, they have conceded in five of their last seven on the road and the result has been plenty of high-scoring affairs. In fact, six of these seven games have seen at least three goals scored.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa have seen at least three goals in nine of their last 11 games at Villa Park; considering the last meeting between these teams in December saw a 4-1 Leicester win, we like the look of Over 2.5 Goals here.

With Leicester’s excellent away record, we’re expecting a win for the visitors. They have averaged 2.29 goals per away game and Aston Villa have conceded 1.57 goals per home game.

AVL VS LEI: Predicted starting lineup

Aston Villa: Reina; Konsa, Mings, Hause; Guilbert, Luiz, Nakamba, Targett; Trezeguet, Grealish, El Ghazi.

Leicester City: Schmeichel; Pereira, Evans, Soyuncu, Chilwell; Ndidi, Tielemans, Maddison, Perez, Barnes; Vardy.

AVL VS LEI: Best players

Aston Villa: Mbwana Samatta

Aston Villa have not had much luck in the forward department this season, with summer signing Wesley suffering a serious knee injury to leave the Villans short of options up top.

However, Mbwana Samatta has arrived from KRC Genk to help ease Dean Smith’s attacking woes. A move to Villa Park has, unsurprisingly, led to an upturn in the Tanzania international’s Football Index value and that will continue if he hits the ground running in English football.

Smith has been forced to play without a recognised forward in recent weeks and may be tempted to throw Samatta straight into his side on Tuesday night. The 27-year-old’s form may yet define Villa’s season and he will be determined to make an immediate impact for his new club, having enjoyed a solid goalscoring record in Belgium.

Key stat: Mbwana Samatta scored 10 goals for Genk this season, including one Champions League strike against Liverpool at Anfield.

Leicester City: Caglar Soyuncu

Jamie Vardy has naturally been stealing the headlines, while James Maddison has also been a hot topic of conversation, but arguably the player of Leicester’s accelerating season has been Caglar Soyuncu.

The Turkey international has been the outstanding pillar of Brendan Rodgers’ defence; he is the chief policeman in the club’s watertight backline, but he offers so much more than a traditional centre-back.

Soyuncu is the springboard of Leicester’s attacks, able to carry the ball forward when in possession or play out from the back seamlessly. If the Foxes have hopes of subduing what is set to be a raucous Villa Park crowd, then Soyuncu will be the key component in that quest.

Key stat: Only Virgil van Dijk (1,860) has made more passes than Caglar Soyuncu (1,577) in the Premier League this season.
