A robust Indian roster enjoyed their most excellent boxing showing at a Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, sweeping up to nine medals, including three gold. With three gold medals – Mary Kom (light-flyweight), Vikas Krishan (middleweight), and Gaurav Solanki (flyweight), India topped hosts Australia to take second place in the boxing medals tally.

Boxer Mohammad Hussamuddin specializes in the 57 kg weight division. In New Delhi, he clinched bronze in the first India International Open boxing tournament.

Hussamuddin claimed a bronze medal at the 2018 Gold Coast Games in Australia and will be hoping to win another medal in Birmingham.

 

LOVLINA BORGOHAIN (Women’s 70 kg)

Lovlina Borgohain clinched the bronze medal in the women’s welterweight category at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, becoming just the third Indian boxer to achieve that feat. She earned a bronze medal at both the 2018 and 2019 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships.

Lovlina took gold in the first India Open International Boxing Championship in New Delhi and silver in the second India Open International Boxing Championship in Guwahati.

Borgohain is Assam’s first female athlete and the state’s second boxer to participate in the Olympics.

SHIVA THAPA (Men’s 63.5 kg)

When he debuted in the 2012 London Olympics, Indian boxer Shiva Thapa became the youngest Indian boxer to compete at the Olympics. In the AIBA Men’s World Rankings, he is seeded third in the bantamweight division.

Shiva is just the third Indian boxer to clinch a medal at the AIBA World Boxing Championships and only the third Indian to win gold at the Asian Games.

 

NIKHAT ZAREEN (Women’s 50 kg)

Nikhat Zareen, a 26-year-old boxer, is one to watch at the upcoming Games. In 2022 itself, she achieved a gold finish at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. She also won gold at the 2011 AIBA Women’s Youth & Junior World Boxing Championships in Antalya.

In Guwahati, she claimed bronze in the second India Open International Boxing Event. Zareen is just the fifth Indian female boxer to win an IBA World Boxing Championship gold medal.

She has had a fresh start to her career since winning the World Championships. This boost will enable her to win a medal at the event.

AMIT PANGHAL (Men’s 51 kg)

 

Amit Panghal is an amateur boxer who has won the Asian Games and a silver medal at the World Championships. He earned a silver medal in the Flyweight class at the 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships.

Panghal, who captured a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games, was recommended for the Arjuna Awards by the Boxing Federation of India in recognition of his outstanding performance in the Asian Games.

He achieved silver in the light flyweight category at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and has been the top seed in the 52 kg bracket. Panghal qualified for the 2020 Olympics as the world number one in the 52 kg division.

Amit had to settle for a silver medal at the 2022 Thailand Open after narrowly losing to the Philippines’ 2018 Asian Games silver medalist Rogen Ladon.
