Maradona was the player everyone wanted to be like: Zidane

Real Madrid manager and also one of the best players who have played the game of football Zinedine Zidane expressed his grief over the demise of Argentine great Diego Maradona who suffered a heart attack on 25th November 2020 at the age of 60. Paying his sincere gratitude towards the legendary player Zidane said that ‘Maradona was the player every player wanted to be like”.

“I regret having to start with this news because we learned about it this evening and it’s incredibly sad, not just for football but for the whole world. My main memories of Maradona are from the World Cup in ’86, I was 14 years old and as you say, he was a unique player,” the club’s official website quoted Zidane as saying.

“He was the player everyone wanted to be like. Every kid wanted the chance to talk to him and I got the opportunity to tell him he was an unbelievable player and I still remember that. It’s sad news and we’re thinking of his family. May he rest in peace, that’s the most important thing,” he added.

His remarks came after locking horns against Inter Milan in a Champions League match where they defeated Italian club by 2-0 and he also praised his team performance for the amazing victory.

“It was a great display. They were 3 crucial points tonight. It was a final, as ever, and the team showed great spirit from beginning to end and never let their focus drop. We deserved the 3 points, we knew how important the game was,” Zidane said.

Players from both the teams observed a minute silence before starting the match to pay sincere gratitude to the master. “Minute’s silence in memory of Maradona. #RealMadrid,” Real Madrid had tweeted.

Maradona who is regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time, he was one of the two joint winners of the FIFA Player of the 20th Century award. During his playing tenure, he was known for his agile movements, dribbling skills, passing ball and adequate control combined with his low stature which gives him a low centre of gravity which allowed him to dominate the game of football better than any other players. He was also known for dribbling ball in front of multiple opposition players on a run. He was also known as Free Kick Specialist. For his outstanding talent, he was given the nickname “The Golden Kid”  during his playing days which stuck with him throughout his carrier.

He has represented different clubs in 491 appearances and scored 259 goals and for the national team, he scored 42 goals from 106 matches including junior team combined. He was the first player in football history to set world record transfer fee twice, first when transferred to Barcelona for a world-record fee of 5 million pounds and then to Napoli for 6.9 million pounds. He also became the coach of Argentina National team in 2008 and was in charge of the team at 2010 World Cup held in South Africa. His death has left a huge void in Argentina Football history which will not be easy to fill for years to come. On his death celebrity all over the world took to social media and paid their sincere condolences to the master craftsman who are born once in a decade.
