MS Dhoni's Cricket Stats

A man with an unflappable personality, Mahendra Singh Dhoni is one of the most loved cricketers in world cricket. The former Indian skipper has given his country countless memories to rejoice. 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 World Cup, 2013 Champions Trophy, there is not a single ICC Trophy that the Ranchi Cricketer didn’t get hold of in his captaincy career. Having said that, MS Dhoni has been equally valuable with bat and gloves. In his illustrious International career, he has scored 10,773 runs in 350 one-day internationals at an average of 50.6.

Here’s a look at his journey from his junior cricketing days to becoming a phenomenon in world cricket:

Early Years of MS Dhoni

One who has given so much to Indian Cricket, MS Dhoni wasn’t too much inclined towards cricket in his childhood days and would mostly play sports like Badminton and football. It was during one of those days when he was establishing himself as a goalkeeper for the school team and was sent to keep the wickets for a local cricket club by his football coach. This was the same match where he impressed everyone with his wicket-keeping skills and became a regular member of the Commando cricket club thereafter.

Well, life wasn’t that easy for Dhoni growing up. Opportunities were hard to come by. However, his grit and determination never let him give up on his dream. Coming from a middle-class family, he worked as a Train Ticket Examination apart from playing cricket. Dhoni used to accommodate his cricket practice along with his job and even though he didn’t get selected in most of the initials trials for the state team, he never gave up on his dream to represent India at the highest level.

Domestic Cricket Career

MS Dhoni made his debut for the Bihar Ranji Team in 1999-2000. In his debut innings against Assam, he scored 68 runs and finished the season with 283 runs in 5 matches. Excellent performances in the Ranji Trophy for few years meant he was then selected to represent East Zone. He wreaked havoc and made his case for India A squad. He made his first tour for India A against Zimbabwe.

Bihar U-19 cricket team advanced to the finals of 1999–2000 Cooch Behar Trophy, where Dhoni made 84 to help Bihar post a total of 357. Bihar’s efforts were dwarfed by Punjab U-19s’ 839 with Dhoni’s future national squad teammate Yuvraj Singh making 358. Dhoni’s contribution in the tournament included 488 runs (9 matches, 12 innings), 5 fifties, 17 catches and 7 stumpings. Dhoni made it to the East Zone U-19 squad for the CK Nayudu trophy but scored only 97 runs in four matches, as East Zone lost all four matches and finished last in the tournament.

In 2001-02, he scored his maiden first class century while playing for Bengal.

2002-03 season saw him scoring three half-centuries in the Ranji Trophy and two centuries in Deodhar Trophy.

Excellent performances in the Ranji Trophy for few years meant he was then selected to represent East Zone. He made stellar performances and made his case for India A squad. He made his first tour for India A against Zimbabwe.

In the tri-nation tournament involving Kenya, India A and Pakistan A, Dhoni helped India A chase down their target of 223 against Pakistan A with a half-century. Continuing his good performance, he scored back to back centuries – 120 and 119* – against the same team. Dhoni scored 362 runs in 6 innings at an average of 72.40 and his performance in the series received attention from the then Indian captain – Sourav Ganguly and Ravi Shastri, amongst others.

International Cricket Career

In a bid to find a good wicket-keeper batsman, MS Dhoni was selected for the Bangladesh tour in 2004-05. He started off his international career in the most inauspicious fashion, getting run out on a golden duck. He endured a modest run against Bangladesh. He exhibited his class in the following series against Pakistan, where he notched his maiden International century in the fifth ODI, scoring 148 runs off 123 balls.

# 2007 World Cup: India were going into the 2007 World Cup on the back of excellent performances against West Indies and Sri Lanka. Dhoni averaged more than 100 during this time.

However, to everyone’s surprise, India crashed out of the tournament following the losses against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the group stage. MS Dhoni scored just 29 runs in the tournament which include ducks in two innings.

MS Dhoni was then named as the vice-captain of the limited over’s side in the India-England ODI series followed by which he got an ‘A’ grade contract in June 2007.

# 2007 T20 World Cup: India went into the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup as the underdogs. A young Indian side led by MS Dhoni shocked everyone as they lifted the title after winning against Pakistan in the final.

MS Dhoni-led the young Indian side to victory in Australia- a feat which was achieved only the second time in the history of Indian cricket. Dhoni endured a modest show with the bat, scoring 150 runs at an average of 30.0, however his knock in the final remained as one of the best knocks ever played by Indian batsman in the history of ICC World Cup. Coming into the middle before Yuvraj Singh, Dhoni held his nerve and scored 91 not out, helping his team win the title after 28 years. Thus, Dhoni became the second-ever Indian captain to lift the World Cup title.

# 2013 Champions Trophy: Under MS Dhoni, India has achieved 2007 T20 World Cup title, 2011 50-over World Cup and only the only ICC trophy which was left to be achieved was ICC Champions Trophy. Come 2013 and Dhoni turned every captain’s dream into reality as India ended up winning the 2013 edition of the Champions Trophy and thereby attaining all the ICC titles to his name.

Shocking Retirement from Test Cricket

Dhoni Retirement from Test

In the 2014-15 Australia tour, MS Dhoni left everyone in a complete state of shock after announcing retirement midway through the series. India was trailing 2-0 in the series and was due to play the fourth Test when MS Dhoni came out with an unexpected announcement of retiring from Test Cricket.

They won all the group stage games and reached semi-finals unbeaten only to falter against Australia in knock out. Dhoni made 65 in the semi-final game against the Aussies but was to no avail.

Stepping Down from Captaincy in ODIs

Ahead of the ODI series against England in 2017, MS Dhoni stepped down as the captain of India in One-Day Internationals. It’s the same series where MS Dhoni struck his tenth one-day hundred. He scored 134 runs off 122 balls in the second one-day international.

Mahendra Singh recorded a huge feat in the England 2018 tour. In the second ODI of the series, he completed 10,000 one-day international runs.

MS Dhoni played his third 50-over World Cup in 2019 edition, but this time as a player. He didn’t get too bat in most of the games but did play well when it needed the most. In the semi-final against New Zealand, while wickets kept falling at regular intervals, Dhoni tried to his best to take as close to the target as possible. The former Indian skipper could have taken India home had it not been that unfortunate run-out. The Ranchi cricketer has been on a sabbatical and has not played a single match ever since.
