Aqib Ilyas Biography: Age, Birth Place, Personal Life, Achievements, and more

It is the number of hardships a person faces in his or her life that defines where the person is headed in his or her life. Growing up in one country and moving to another country for survival has been the story of Oman national cricket team player, Aqib Ilyas. Ilyas is a part of the Oman cricket team that will be participating in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Personal Life

Ilyas was born on September 5, 1992, in Sialkot, Pakistan, and is the younger brother of Adnan Ilyas, who also played international cricket for Oman. When Ilyas was six months old, his family moved to Oman, where he grew up in Muscat. He relocated to Dubai in 2010 to attend university and study civil engineering. 

During this period, he was invited to train with the United Arab Emirates’ national cricket squad. However, after finishing his degree, he decided to return to Oman and play cricket at the place where he dreamed about being a cricketer. In 2021, Ilyas detected a growth on his ankle bone, which was medically removed and found to be benign. Regardless, he required an 18-month rehabilitation time but was back to playing cricket in full steam soon after the rehabilitation.

Career

On November 21, 2015, Aqib Ilyas made his T20I debut for Oman against Hong Kong. In January 2018, he was named to Oman’s squad for the ICC World Cricket League Division Two event and made his List A debut on February 8, 2018. Later in August, he competed in the Asia Cup Qualifier, becoming Oman’s best run scorer with 186 runs in five matches. 

He continued to perform well, striking a century against the United States in the ICC World Cricket League Division Three competition in October 2018 and competing in the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in December. In March 2019, Ilyas was part of Oman’s squad for the ICC World Cricket League Division Two competition in Namibia, where the country earned ODI status. 

He made his ODI debut against Namibia on April 27, 2019, and finished the tournament as Oman’s best run scorer with 168 runs in six matches. In September 2019, Ilyas was selected as the as the vice captain of the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier event, and the ICC recognized him as a vital player to watch. He returned as vice captain for the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in November 2019.

On February 9, 2020, Ilyas struck an unbeaten 109 runs against Nepal, giving Oman its first ODI century. Two days later, he scored another century against the United States, this time for 105 runs. In September 2021, he was selected as Oman’s vice captain for the ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup.
