Avinash Sable Biography: Avinash Sable is an Indian Track & Field Athlete who specializes in 3000m Steeplechase events and also holds the national record of 8:21.37 created in 2019. He broke the 37-year-old national record to win the gold medal in the 3000 m steeplechase event. The record was previously held by Gopal Saini which he achieved in Tokyo in 1981.

EARLY LIFE:

Avinash Sable was born on 13 September 1994 in the Mandwa village of Beed district in Maharashtra. He hails from the family of farmers. During his childhood,  he would run or walk 6 km from his home till school as there was no transport facility in his village. He always had a patriotic feeling for the country and he always wanted to do something for the country. So after completing his 12th in 2011, he joined the Indian army. He was posted in the Siachen Glacier in 2013-2014 with the 5 Mahar regiment of the Indian Army. Within a year he was then transferred to Rajasthan followed by Sikkim in 2015.

PERSONAL LIFE:

Avinash has completed his graduation from the University of Pune ad currently lives in Bangalore. He is currently placed as a Junior Commissioned Officer (Gazetted officer) in the army. He is unmarried and lives with his family.

Avinash first participated in the Army sports events at the insistence of his colleagues. He eventually qualified in the Army services team in the year 2015. Two years later in 2017, he made into the cross country national championships for the first time. Avinash continued to improve his timing and stamina and it was exactly at that time when he caught the eyes of Captain Amrish Kumar Chief coach of Army’s distance running program. Since then Avinash started focussing on the 3000 m steeplechase discipline.

Avinash Sable who missed out on the 2018 Asian Games due to ankle injury participated in the 37th National Games where he set a national record after 37 years which was previously held by Gopal Saini. He clocked 8:29.80 at the 2018 National Open Championships in Bhubaneswar.

He has participated in the Federation Cup held in Patiala in 2019 where he set the national record of  8:28.94 and his personal best too. He got a direct qualification in the 2019 Asian Athletics Championships and 2019 World Athletics Championships. Sable won the silver medal at the 2019 Asian Athletics Championships in Doha, his debut international event, with timing of 8:30.19. He also became the first Steeplechaser to qualify for the World Athletics Championships since 1991. 

On 1 October 2019, he again broke his own national record at the World Athletics Championships by clocking  8:25.23.  The 25-year-old from Mandwa in Maharashtra had made it to in dramatic circumstances after he initially failed to make an impact. 

He was later included among the men’s 3000m steeplechase finalists after the Athletics Federation of India successfully protested that he was obstructed by other athletes during the heat race. He further improved the national record to 8:21.37 in the final, finishing 13th out of 16 runners, and qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics.

CONTROVERSY:

In 2018, Avinash Sable made into the headlines for giving a statement that he would prefer training under an Indian coach as they understand the needs of the Indian athletes properly as compared to the foreign coaches. Long-distance running coach Nikolai Snesarev resigned from his position despite his contract running till 2020. This all happened after Avinash decided to train under his army coach Amrish Kumar. Several Indian athletes, including Lalita Babar, Sudha Singh, and OP Jaisha, have trained under Snesarev.
