Sandeep Kumar is an Indian racewalker who competes in the 20km and 50km events. A valuable part of India’s racewalking squad for the last three years, Manish Singh Rawat finished 13th in the racewalking event at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Sandeep sealed his spot for the Rio 2016 Olympics with a timing of 1:23:32 in the men’s 20km race walk at the IAAF Race Walking Challenge in Portugal.

EARLY LIFE: 

Indian track and field athlete, Sandeep Kumar was born on 1st May 1986. Coming from a small town in Haryana, Sandeep has become one of the top Indian athletes in track and field events.

Sandeep Kumar was born in a farmer’s house, having no background in sports. However, his admission into the Jat Regiment Centre tempted him to take up racewalking professionally and dream of earning a medal in Olympics.

Sandeep was introduced to the sport two years after he joined the Jat Regiment centre of the Indian Army in 2006.

A track and field event, racewalking is no easy sport given at no-point your feet can be mid-air and doing so would risk being disqualified. Apart from the inherent stamina, technique, and fitness required in any long-distance race, walking tests your mental focus like no other sport.

PROFESSIONAL LIFE: 

Sandeep Kumar broke a new national record, previously set by Basant Bahadur Rana (3:56:48) at 2012 London Olympics, clocking 3:56:22 at IAFF World Race Walking camp at Taicang, China in the year 2014,

Sandeep sealed his berth for the 2016 Rio Olympics, after clocking 1:23:32 in the Men’s 20km walk race at the IAFF Race Walking Challenge in Portugal.

Sandeep Kumar made headlines when he made a national record of 3:56:00 in the 50km event at the National Race Walking championship in 2018. The following year, he again bagged gold in the same event, clocking 3:56:71 seconds.

Persistent problems with coach Alexander Artsybashev led him to shift his training camp from Bengaluru SAI Center to NIS Patiala.

“I was having issues with the coach. Improvement in the performance of an athlete comes only if there is an understanding with coach but he (Alexander) had stopped listening to me. I requested the AFI that I be allowed to train under another coach. AFI accepted and I am now at NIS Patiala training under Surender Kumar sir,” Sandeep said in an interview with TOI.

“I qualified for 2017 World Championhsips in London in both 20km and 50km but he (Alexander) cut out my name and put K Ganapathi (20km event) instead. He put Ganapathi in 20km event in Rio also, instead of me. With Alexander, its is like working under pressure,” he added.

Track and field athlete, Sandeep Kumar was born in Mahendragarh town in Haryana. Coming from a farming background, Sandeep perhaps had never dreamt of participating in racewalking and represents his nation at global stage.

“Now, I just walk and walk, I don’t have much time for anything else.” He said in an interview with The Hindu.
