EARLY LIFE

The wrestler hailing from Haryana became the first Indian to win an Olympic Greco-Roman after Mukesh Khatri in 2004. In 2013, Hardeep Singh became the Commonwealth Champion and also was a runner-up at the Asian Wrestling Championships in 2016. In 2016, he was the first Indian heavyweight Greco-Roman to successfully for the Olympics.

PERSONAL LIFE

Wrestler Hardeep Singh was born on 20th December 1990 to farmer parents in Dahola Village, Jind District, Haryana. He started wrestling when he was in school. His coach noticed the talented little Hardeep Sigh and hence, enrolled him to a sports school where he was taught the basics. Hardeep was trained for long 3 years at the Sports Authority of India’s regional centre. Hardeep made a good impression there due to which he was further sent to the Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi to sharp his wrestling skills and he trained there for four years. Meanwhile, Hardeep Singh was also employed in the Indian Railways. It is amazing how a wrestler who started as a freestyle wrestler during his early days but later switched to the Greco-Roman style after his participation in the Junior National Wrestling Championships in 2009.

PROFESSIONAL LIFE

2013

Hardeep Singh’s performance at the World Wrestling Championships 2013 was short-lived as the wrestler lost it in 16th round to Moldava’s Marin Cazac by 3-1.

In November, Hardeep represented Railway Sports Promotion Board and won the gold medal at the 58th Senior National Wrestling Championship at Kolkata in the 96 kg category of Greco-Roman. He won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship 2013 & defeated South Africa’s Julian Labuschagne in the 96 kg category of Greco-Roman and the year ended on a high note for the Indian wrestler. Hardeep Sigh finished in the 96 kg category of freestyle in that event where won a bronze medal.

2014

Hardeep Singh competed at the Asian Wrestling Championships 2014 in April. He earned the 1st round after defeating Uzbekistan’s Jahongir Turdiev by 3-1. But the wrestler lost gold after been defeated by medalist Yerulan Iskakov in the next round. He also secured a bronze medal through a repechage. He was defeated by China’s Di Xiao by 4-0 & was finished in the fifth position.

2015

On a positive note, Hardeep Singh started the year by earning gold medal at the 35th National Games. At the World Wrestling Championships 2015, wrestler Hardeep Singh started well but ended up losing the game.  Despite his lose, 2015 ended up on a high note as he won a gold medal at the 60th Senior National Wrestling Championship.

2016

Hardeep Singh earned a silver medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships in the 98 kg weight discipline after losing the gold medal to Mehdi Aliyari in the final. He also competed in the Asian Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament 2016 in the 98 kg category and strongly defeated Margulan Assembekov from Kazakhstan in the semifinals. Unfortunately, the wrestler lost in the final due to a injury although he secured the Olympic quota by reaching to finals. And it was for the first time since 2004 that an Indian Greco-Roman wrestler made himself to an Olympic berth.
