Sakshi has secured a place in the Indian squad for the Asia/Oceania Olympic qualifiers with a magnificent triumph in the trails.

Early Life

Sakshi was born to Sheela and Manoj Kumar in Bhiwani District of Haryana on 9th September 2000. Since her childhood days, she loved sports, be it running in the fields or to learn swimming in a nearby pond. Boxing wasn’t a preferred sport for a girl in Haryana during those days, but her passion for boxing was immense and she was ready to defy all odds to achieve glory.

Her role model was Vijender Singh who has a major in the revolution and popularity of the sport in the country. Sakshi’s aunt Sunita Malik, took interest in her boxing skills as well as took care of her earlier days. According to Sunita, boxing came naturally to Sakshi. One could easily observe that aggression and passion in her. Her traits resulted in her being sent to the Bhiwani Boxing Club (BBC) in 2012 where Jagdish Singh her childhood coach taught her the basics of the sport.

Professional Life

Sakshi’s passion for the first saw a result when she won silver at the 7th Sub Junior Women Haryana State Boxing Championships in 2012. She followed it up with two consecutive gold medals at the 8th & 9th Sub Junior championships in 2013 and 2014 respectively. Winning Sub-Juniors back to back meant she was ready for the real challenge and she did deliver at every step forward.

At the age of 15, Sakshi came into the limelight when she emerged champion with a win over the US National champion Yarisel Ramirez in the final of the AIBA World Junior Women’s Championships in the year of 2015. This is where the real story for success began, it assured her coaches and family that she had what it took to be among the best in the business.

In 2017, Sakshi bagged a gold at the World Youth Championship in Guwahati and followed it up at the World Youth Championship in Hungary, where she won a gold in the year 2018 and repeated the feat at the Balkan Open in Bulgaria. She also won a bronze and a silver medal at exposure tournaments in Serbia.

Her current Coach Mohammed Ali Qamar a former boxer in his time has high praises for her and she seems to be on the right path as she makes it into the Indian squad for the Asia/Oceania Olympic qualifiers. Trials for the Asia/Oceania Olympic qualifiers were being held at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in the national capital, Delhi and it concluded on December 28. Sakshi defeated Sonia Lather with 9-1 in the 57 kg category in the trials and sealed her spot in the Olympic qualifier squad of India.

Achievements

  1. She won a silver medal at the 7th Sub Junior Women Haryana State Boxing Championships at Anand Mohan School Jhajjar in the year 2012.
  2. She bagged the gold medal at the 8th Sub-Junior Women State Boxing Championships at Sports Complex Devsar, Bhiwani in 2013.
  3. She added another gold medal when she won the 9th Sub-Junior Women State Boxing Championships at Tohana, Fatehabad in 2014.
  4. She won gold at the international stage for the first time at the AIBA World Junior Women’s Championships in 2015.
  5. In the year 2017, Sakshi won the gold medal at the World Youth Championship in Guwahati.
  6. In 2017 she also won the 11th Junior Women Haryana State Boxing Championship.
  7. She won the World Youth Championship in Hungary in the year 2018.
  8. She recently won in the Olympic trials held in Delhi and made it into the Indian squad for the Asia/Oceania Olympic qualifiers.
