#1. MS Dhoni

Arguably, the greatest skipper India has ever had in the history of Indian Cricket, MS Dhoni sits right at the top in the list of top 5 captains in Indian Cricket. The former Indian skipper had been an ambassador of Indian cricket for over a decade.

One of the most loved cricketers in the world, MS Dhoni has been an inspiration for an endless number of cricketers. Dhoni led India to win some of the most prestigious trophies. Under his leadership, India won the 2007 T20 World Cup, followed by the 2011 World Cup and 2013 champions Trophy.

Under his tutelage, India attained the number one spot for the first time in test cricket in the year 2009. Dhoni also has two Asia Cup trophies to his name, won in 2010 and 2016.

He took over the captaincy duties from Rahul Dravid in 2007 and captained India for more than a decade in limited over’s format.

He had led India in 200 one-day internationals, of which 110 matches have resulted in a win, while India suffered defeat in 74 besides 5 tied games. He boasts of a winning percentage of 59.25.

Making his debut in 1985, Mohammad Azharuddin went on to play for 15 years. Azharuddin captained India between 1990 and 1999.

Under his leadership, India played 174 one-day internationals, out of which, 90 matches resulted in a win, while India lost on 76 occasions, besides 2 tied games.

A renowned name in world cricket, Sourav Ganguly took on the captaincy when India were going through the most tumultuous period. He went onto become one of the most popular figures in Indian cricket.

Sourav Ganguly led India from 1999 to 2005 and also helped India reach the final of 2003 World Cup. Under his leadership, India played 146 one-day internationals, out of which, 76 matches resulted in a win, while 65 matches were lost. He has a winning percentage of 53.90.

In his international cricket career, Ganguly played 311 one-day internationals and 113 test matches, in which he has scored 11,363 and 7212 runs respectively.

A talented batsman, Dravid had everything to reach greater heights in his career. A player of all formats, Dravid enjoyed success in both one-day internationals and test cricket.

Dravid played 164 test matches and 344 one-day internationals in his international cricket career, in which he racked up 10,889 and 7212 runs respectively.

Rahul Dravid took over the captaincy from Sourav Ganguly in 2005 and captained the nation in 79 one-day internationals. He managed to win 42 games as captaincy while losing on 33 occasions.
