Lowest Scores by CSK in IPL

In the fast-paced world of Twenty20, no side is safe from having the occasional off day. Despite being one of the most decorated sides in IPL history, even Chennai Super Kings are no exception. #5. 112/9 vs Royal Challengers Bangalore (2008)

CSK vs RCB
Although Chennai had one of the best batting lineups in the inaugural edition of the tournament, most players were still trying to come to terms with T20 and the unique pressures the format comes with. The match had started off really well for Chennai, as a disciplined bowling performance spearheaded by 4/32 from Albie Morkel saw them restrict Rahul Dravid-led Royal Challengers Bangalore to just 126/8 in the first innings. However, what seemed like a routine chase was jolted by a mini-collapse in the middle order as they lost four wickets for just eight runs to slump from 85/2 to 93/6. Anil Kumble produced a match-winning spell of 3/14 in the four overs as Chennai could only manage 112/8 in the second innings, as a result making it to this list of CSK’s 5 lowest scores in IPL history.

#4. 110/8 vs Delhi Daredevils (2012)

CSK vs DC

Although Delhi Daredevils (as they were then known) have been a favoured opponent for CSK over the years, this encounter in the 2012 edition will not be remembered fondly by the boys in yellow. Put in to bat first, CSK crawled their way to 110/8, thanks to a splendid bowling display from the Daredevils. With a relatively small target to chase, the Daredevils cantered home with 40 balls and 8 wickets to spare, with Morne Morkel receiving the man of the match award for an economical spell in the first innings.

#3. 109 vs Mumbai Indians (2019)

CSK vs MI

Next on this list of lowest scores by CSK in IPL history is their most recent entry, a disappointing 46-run loss to eventual champions Mumbai Indians in 2019. In a preview of the tournament’s final, MI scored 155/4 in the first innings thanks largely to captain Rohit Sharma’s 67. Chennai would have backed themselves to chase the modest total down, but Lasith Malinga had other ideas! Having dismissed Shane Watson early on, the Sri Lankan pacer returned to clean up the tail and end up with figures of 4/37 as CSK were bundled out for a measly 109 in 17.4 overs in front of their home crowd.

#2. 109 vs Rajasthan Royals (2008)

CSK vs RR

From the most recent edition of the IPL to the very first one, this list of CSK’s 5 lowest scores in IPL history takes us all the way back to 2008. Rajasthan Royals were the underdogs of the tournament right from the very start, and their famous win in the finals is one of the IPL’s most thrilling and heart-warming stories. However, this was the match when Shane Warne’s team made it clear that they were not going to be the tournament’s whipping boys. Pakistan’s Sohail Tanvir bowled the spell of a lifetime, finishing with figures of 6/14, which remained the best bowling figures in IPL history for a long time before Alzarri Joseph recently claimed the record for himself. Having dismissed CSK for just 109 the Royals cruised to an 8-wicket win, eventually beating the same opposition in the final as well.

#1. 79 vs Mumbai Indians (2013)

CSK vs MI

This list of CSK’s 5 lowest scores in IPL history takes a substantial drop from its previous entries to reach the number one spot. Playing Mumbai Indians in Mumbai in 2013, CSK had done reasonably well to restrict Mumbai to 139/5 in their 20 overs. However, Mitchell Johnson tore through the CSK batting order with a spell of searing fast bowling, quashing the chase before it even began. His three-wicket haul was matched by Pragyan Ojha as the CSK innings folded for just 79, handing Mumbai the 60-run win.
